I get the worry about insurance companies tracking every little thing, but honestly, I’ve had the opposite experience. I used my insurance’s roadside assistance twice last year—once for a flat, once for a dead battery—and my rates didn’t budge. Maybe it depends on the company, but mine treats roadside calls separately from claims.

Here’s my take: if you’re already paying for roadside through your insurance, why double up with AAA? Unless you’re using the travel discounts or other perks, it seems like extra cost. I’d rather keep things simple and not juggle two memberships. Plus, my insurer’s app makes it dead easy to get help—no waiting on hold, no paperwork.

That said, if you’ve got teen drivers, I get wanting the extra coverage. Teens and car trouble go hand in hand... But for me, the insurance route’s been just as reliable and less hassle. Maybe I’m just lucky, but it’s worked out fine so far.

I totally get where you’re coming from. You nailed it with,

“if you’re already paying for roadside through your insurance, why double up with AAA?”
That’s been my approach too—why pay twice for the same peace of mind? I’ve used my insurance’s roadside a couple times on long trips, and it was smooth sailing. I do know a few folks who swear by AAA for the travel perks, but for just towing and flats, I haven’t seen a big difference. Keeping it simple just makes sense, especially when you’re watching your budget.

I hear you on the budget part—no sense in paying double if your insurance roadside works well. I did have a weird experience once where my insurance’s roadside took forever to show up, but maybe that was just bad luck. AAA’s travel discounts are tempting, though... if you actually use them.

I totally get the temptation with those AAA discounts—every time I see one of those “save 10% on hotels” deals, I think, maybe this is the year I’ll actually take a vacation. But then again, I barely leave my zip code, so… not sure it’s worth it for me.

I’ve had insurance roadside show up pretty quick once, but another time I waited so long I started wondering if I should just learn how to change a tire myself (spoiler: still can’t). Does AAA really show up faster, or is that just the legend? Also, do people actually use those travel perks, or do they just sound good on paper?

Honestly, if my insurance keeps working and doesn’t leave me stranded too often, I’m sticking with it. But if AAA hands out free tows and hotel discounts like candy, maybe I’m missing out.

I’ve had AAA for years, mostly because I drive a car that’s not exactly cheap to fix if something goes wrong. In my experience, they do tend to show up faster than my old insurance roadside did—especially in weird spots (like when my battery died at a golf course parking lot). The hotel discounts are real, but honestly, I use them maybe once every few years. For me, it’s more peace of mind knowing that if my car decides to throw a tantrum, AAA usually gets someone out there pretty quick. The perks are nice, but I wouldn’t call them life-changing unless you travel a ton.
