I get where you’re coming from. I’ve had a couple of breakdowns (not proud of it, haha) and my insurance roadside has always come through, even when I was in the middle of nowhere. The only time I wished I had AAA was when I needed a longer tow—my insurance only covered like 10 miles. If you don’t drive super far from home, sticking with insurance makes sense. Just double-check what they actually cover, since it can be kinda limited sometimes.

That’s the kicker, right? Most people don’t realize their insurance roadside is basically “get you off the highway” coverage. AAA’s got those longer tows and extra perks (like discounts at random hotels), but you’re paying for it. Honestly, if you’re a homebody or just commute locally, insurance is usually fine. But if you ever do road trips or have an older car, AAA can save your bacon. Seen too many folks surprised by that 10-mile limit...

Has anyone actually compared the response times between AAA and insurance roadside? I’ve heard stories about both being slow, but I wonder if one’s consistently better. Also, does AAA always use their own trucks, or do they contract out like insurance companies do?

I’ve actually had both, and honestly, neither is lightning fast every time. AAA usually contracts out, just like most insurance companies do, especially in rural areas. I’d argue it’s less about the brand and more about which local tow company is available when you call. Once waited two hours for AAA because their contracted guy was swamped... not ideal if you’re stuck with an older car on the side of the highway.

Honestly, I’m with you on this one.

That’s been my experience too. The insurance roadside add-ons are usually cheaper than a standalone AAA membership, but you’re still rolling the dice on who actually shows up—and how long it takes. Plus, some insurers cap how many tows or miles you get per year, so reading the fine print really matters. I've had friends get stuck with extra fees because they didn’t realize their policy only covered short-distance tows. At the end of the day, if you’re out in the boonies, nobody’s coming fast—no matter who you call.
