Honestly, I get it. I’ve had insurance roadside show up and it was fine—quick, no drama. The random tow truck thing is a little weird, but as long as they get me moving again, I don’t care who it is. AAA just seems like overkill if you’re mostly local.

I’m with you on the insurance roadside thing. I’ve used it a couple times—once for a flat and once when my battery died in a grocery store parking lot. Both times, it was just some local tow guy, but honestly, I didn’t care as long as they showed up and got me out of there. I don’t even remember what company the truck was from, just that it wasn’t branded AAA or anything.

AAA always seemed like something my parents had for road trips or if you’re driving cross-country. For me, I’m just commuting around town and maybe doing a weekend trip here and there. Paying extra for AAA every year feels kind of pointless when my insurance already covers the basics. Plus, insurance roadside is usually bundled in with my policy for like $10–$15 a year, which is way cheaper than AAA’s yearly fee.

The only time I’ve heard someone regret not having AAA was when they needed a longer tow—like more than 10 miles—and their insurance only covered up to 5 or something. But that’s never come up for me. If my car’s that dead, I’d probably just get it towed to the nearest shop anyway.

One thing that did bug me once: the insurance dispatch sent a random guy who took forever to show up because he was covering a huge area. That’s maybe where AAA could be better? They seem to have more dedicated drivers or at least better coverage in some places. But for normal stuff, like jump starts or lockouts, I don’t see much difference.

I guess if you’re someone who travels a lot or wants all those weird perks AAA throws in (discounts at hotels and stuff), maybe it’s worth it. For me, I’ll stick with whatever keeps the cost down and gets me back on the road without any drama.

- Totally get what you mean about the local tow guy—half the time I just hope someone actually shows up, branded truck or not.

“The only time I’ve heard someone regret not having AAA was when they needed a longer tow—like more than 10 miles—and their insurance only covered up to 5 or something.”
That’s my one hang-up. If my car dies in the middle of nowhere, I’d rather not pay out of pocket for a long haul.
- For regular stuff (lockouts, jump starts), insurance roadside is fine. But if you’re paranoid like me, that “just in case” factor with AAA nags at you a bit.
- Still, $10–$15 a year vs. AAA’s fee? Hard to argue with that math unless you’re road-tripping all the time.
- Honestly, I’m just hoping my battery doesn’t die again in a sketchy parking lot...

That “just in case” feeling is exactly why I’m leaning toward AAA, even though the price is kind of annoying. When I was picking insurance, I actually called both my provider and AAA to ask about tow distances and wait times. My insurance only covers 5 miles, which is fine if you break down in town, but not if you’re out in the sticks. Like you said,

“If my car dies in the middle of nowhere, I’d rather not pay out of pocket for a long haul.”
I’d rather pay a bit more upfront than get stuck with a huge tow bill later. Still debating if it’s worth it since I don’t travel much, but that “what if” keeps bugging me...

Honestly, I keep going back and forth on this too. Is AAA really that much better, or are we just paying for peace of mind? My insurance’s 5-mile tow is basically useless if I’m anywhere but home. But then again, how often am I actually stranded in the middle of nowhere? Maybe once every few years... Still, that “what if” scenario is hard to ignore. Anyone ever actually had AAA save their bacon, or is it mostly just a nice-to-have?
