Running out of gas and waiting forever for help
I swear, my car’s gas light is like a stress test for my decision-making skills. I’m with you - carrying a full gas can in the trunk sounds like something out of a survival movie, but in real life? Not sure I trust myself not to spill it or forget about it until it’s turned into a science experiment in the summer heat. The quarter tank rule is basically my religion now after one too many “will I make it?” moments.
Honestly, I think an empty can makes sense if you’re the type who ends up on random backroads (or if your GPS has a sense of humor). At least then you can hike to a station and not have to MacGyver a solution with a water bottle. But yeah, I’d rather just avoid the panic altogether and fill up when I’m at half a tank. Less drama.
Curious though - has anyone actually had to use their emergency gas can? Or is it one of those things we all think we’ll need but never actually do?

Same here. After running out of gas once on a rural highway at night, I don’t mess around anymore. Waiting for roadside assistance felt like an eternity - cell service was spotty and I had to just sit there hoping someone would stop. Not fun.
I did have an empty gas can in the trunk, but honestly, I never used it. When push came to shove, I just waited for help instead of hiking miles to a station in the dark. Carrying a full can always seemed risky to me (fumes, leaks, etc.), especially in the summer. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather not have flammable stuff rolling around back there.
Now I fill up at half a tank, even if it feels a little overcautious. The peace of mind is worth it.
I totally get it - after my own close call on a back road, I started topping off at a quarter tank too. I used to think carrying a full gas can was smart, but honestly, the smell alone made me nervous. Half a tank might seem like overkill, but it’s way less stressful than chancing it.
I get the gas can thing - my car smelled like a lawnmower for weeks after I tried that. Honestly, I tell people half a tank is the new empty if you drive anywhere rural. It’s like insurance for your peace of mind, and you don’t have to worry about sketchy roadside assistance showing up three hours later. Ever had one of those “will I make it?” moments where you’re eyeing every gas station sign for miles?
Half a tank as the new empty - yeah, I get that logic, especially if you’re out in the sticks. But do you ever worry about the cost of always topping off? I mean, gas prices aren’t exactly friendly these days. I’ve pushed it a few times, thinking I could make it to the next town, and those last 10 miles felt like forever. Do you think it’s better to risk it or just bite the bullet and fill up more often?
