Honestly, I think you’re onto something. It’s easy to trust those range numbers, but they can be way off, especially if you hit traffic or end up taking a detour. I used to push it until the light too, but after hearing a few horror stories (and dealing with one myself), I started filling up at a quarter tank. It’s one less thing to stress about, and you’re right—it’s better than hoofing it to the next gas station. Plus, running out of gas can mess with your fuel pump over time. Might feel weird at first, but your future self will thank you.

That’s a good point about the fuel pump. I used to think that was just one of those car myths, but after reading up on it, it actually makes sense. The pump relies on the gas for cooling, so running low all the time isn’t doing it any favors.

I’ll admit, I still get tempted to stretch it when I’m in a hurry or just don’t feel like stopping. But after getting stuck once on a back road (cell service was spotty, of course), I’m way more cautious now. The stress of watching the range tick down while you’re nowhere near a station isn’t worth it.

I do wonder if the quarter tank rule is a bit conservative for city driving, though. In urban areas, stations are everywhere. But out in the sticks? Yeah, better safe than sorry.

- I get the quarter tank rule, but honestly, in the city I usually push it closer to empty since there’s always a gas station within a mile or two.
- Out in rural areas though, I’m way more cautious—learned that lesson after a long walk once.
- Curious if anyone’s actually had fuel pump issues from running low all the time? Or is it mostly just a risk if you’re always on fumes?

I’ve definitely run my tank down to the warning light more times than I should admit, especially in the city where gas stations are everywhere. Never had a fuel pump go out on me, but I’ve heard it’s more of a risk if you’re always running super low—supposedly the pump uses the gas for cooling, so if you’re constantly on fumes, it can overheat. I figure as long as you’re not making a habit of driving on empty every single day, you’re probably fine. Out in the sticks though? Yeah, I don’t mess around anymore after getting stranded once... not fun.

I hear you on the city vs. country thing—totally different ballgame. I used to push it in town too, but after seeing a buddy get hit with a $700 fuel pump bill (he was always running on fumes), I started topping off more often. Not worth the risk, especially if you’re out in the middle of nowhere and your roadside assistance takes hours. Honestly, I’d rather pay for gas than gamble with getting stranded... or a repair bill that big.
