What happens if your rideshare app is between trips and you get into an accident?

“Hey, what if I’m just waiting for a ping?” They sound as confused as I am.

That’s exactly how my last call with my insurance went. I asked about the “waiting period” and the agent just read the policy back to me like it was supposed to make sense. I get that they need rules, but it really does feel like they’re just looking for ways not to pay out. I mean, if the app’s on and you’re ready to drive, shouldn’t that count? The whole thing’s a headache.

That’s what I thought too, but apparently not. I had a fender bender while just sitting in a parking lot with the app on, waiting for a ride. My regular insurance said it was “rideshare time,” but the rideshare insurance said I wasn’t actually on a trip yet. It’s like they both want to dodge it. Ended up paying out of pocket for a busted headlight... super annoying.

Yeah, it’s a weird gray area.

That “Period 1” when you’re just waiting is notorious for this. Most rideshare policies only offer liability coverage then—no collision or comprehensive. If you want your own car fixed, you usually need special rideshare gap coverage. Super frustrating, but that’s how they get you.

That gap coverage is such a headache—honestly, it feels like you need a law degree just to figure out who’s actually covering you at any given moment. Has anyone here actually filed a claim during that “Period 1” window? Curious if the process is as messy as it sounds or if insurers ever play nice.

I hear you on the headache part—when I first started driving for extra cash, I thought my old ‘92 Buick had seen it all, but insurance during that “Period 1” is a different beast. I did have a minor fender bender while just waiting for a ping, and man, the back-and-forth between my insurer and the rideshare company was like a bad game of telephone. They each pointed at the other, and it took weeks to sort out. Ended up paying my deductible just to get my car back on the road. Not sure “nice” is in their vocabulary during that window...
