how are you supposed to keep track of all those “periods” they talk about?

Honestly, even after years in the biz, I still have to double-check those “periods” every time. It’s like they want you to need a decoder ring just to figure out if you’re covered. I’ve seen folks get tripped up by that “app on, no passenger” loophole more times than I can count. There are a couple companies that try to make it clearer, but even then, the fine print is a jungle. One policy for everything would be a dream... but insurance companies love their little carve-outs.

That’s exactly it. I’ve been around cars my whole life and I still get nervous reading through those rideshare policies. The “periods” system is just asking for trouble—one minute you’re covered, the next you’re in some gray area because you had the app on but weren’t matched with a rider. It’s a mess.

I always tell folks, don’t trust the app to protect you. If you’re using your own car, especially something you care about, get a rideshare gap policy from your own insurer. Yeah, it costs more, but it’s better than finding out you’re on the hook for repairs after a fender bender. I’ve seen too many people burned thinking Uber or Lyft would step in, only to get stonewalled.

Honestly, I wish they’d just make it simple—one policy, all the time. But, like you said, insurance companies love their carve-outs. Just gotta read every line and assume nothing.
