Why Is PIP Mandatory In Some States But Not Others?

I get what you mean about it feeling like a racket sometimes, but honestly, I’m kind of glad it’s there. I just bought my first policy and was annoyed at all the add-ons, but when I looked into PIP, it actually made sense. Health insurance can be picky about what they’ll pay for after a crash—stuff like lost wages or even childcare isn’t always covered. PIP steps in for that. It’s not perfect, but I’d rather have it than get stuck with surprise bills later. Still, I wish we could pick and choose more instead of having it forced on us in some states...

Honestly, I get why PIP exists, but it still bugs me that it’s not optional everywhere. If it’s so useful, why do some states let you skip it? Is it just about state laws or are there actual stats showing people in those places need more coverage? I’ve got a family and the idea of being stuck with bills is scary, but I’d rather decide for myself what’s worth paying for. Anyone ever actually had to use PIP after an accident—did it really make a difference?

I’ve actually had to use PIP after a fender bender a couple years back. Honestly, it was a lifesaver—covered my medical bills fast, no questions asked, and I didn’t have to stress about who was at fault. I get wanting to pick your own coverage, but after that experience, I’m kind of glad it wasn’t optional where I live. With the price of repairs and hospital visits these days, even a “minor” accident can get expensive real quick... especially if you’re driving something that isn’t exactly cheap to fix.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve always felt like mandatory PIP is a bit heavy-handed. Not everyone wants or needs the same level of coverage, and for folks who are already stretching their budgets, those extra premiums can sting. I’d rather have the freedom to shop around and choose what fits my situation best—even if that means taking on a little more risk. Guess it just depends on how much peace of mind is worth to you...

Totally get what you mean about the extra premiums—every dollar counts, especially when you’re just starting out or working with a tight budget. I’ve looked at my own insurance bill and wondered if I really needed all those add-ons. Still, I guess the idea is to protect people from huge medical bills after an accident, but yeah, sometimes it feels like we don’t get much say in how we balance risk vs. cost. It’s a tough call for sure.
