How is PIP coordinated with workers’ comp after a work-related crash?
Discussion options
If someone is injured in a car crash while driving for work, which coverage is generally expected to handle medical bills first: PIP or workers’ compensation? I’m wondering how much that depends on state rules and policy wording, and whether an errand during the workday is treated differently from an ordinary commute.
If the claim order isn’t clear right away, should the bills be sent to both insurers while they sort out responsibility, or is there a risk of duplicate payment or delays? What should the employee ask the auto insurer and employer about eligible expenses and coordination?

A workday errand isn’t automatically covered just because it happened during work hours. The key question is usually whether the trip was serving the employer’s business, rather than being an ordinary commute. A personal detour or a trip with both work and personal purposes can complicate that classification, and state rules matter. It can affect whether workers’ comp applies, but it doesn’t settle by itself whether PIP or workers’ comp pays medical bills first.
