Never been asked for proof, but I always wonder if they’d want a photo or something if my car got stolen. Garage definitely dropped my rate a bit, but not by much—maybe 5 bucks a month? Feels like the “gated lot” thing is just insurance code for “not on the street.”

- You’re not wrong—“gated lot” is basically insurance lingo for “your car’s a bit less likely to get swiped.”
- Proof? Usually not needed unless you file a claim, but if your car gets stolen and you said it was in a garage, they might ask for a lease, photo, or even a letter from the property manager.
- That $5/month drop is pretty standard. Unless you’re parking in Fort Knox, the discount’s usually minor.
- Had a client once who sent me a pic of their “secured” lot... it was literally just a chain across the driveway. Underwriters weren’t impressed.

I’ve always found the “gated lot” thing a bit amusing, honestly. I used to park in a so-called “secured” lot at my old apartment—just a flimsy metal gate that stayed open half the time. My insurer still gave me a small discount, but like you said, it barely made a dent in the premium. When I switched to a place with an actual underground garage, I had to send over a lease agreement as proof after a claim. They definitely get picky if there’s ever an incident. The difference in cost was maybe $6 a month, so not exactly life-changing.

Yeah, I know what you mean about those “secured” lots. I once had my car broken into in a place with a fancy keypad gate—turns out, the code never changed and half the neighborhood knew it. Still, I’d rather have some barrier than nothing at all. Insurance companies definitely love their paperwork when it comes to claims. Six bucks isn’t much, but hey, every bit of security helps me sleep a little better at night.

Honestly, I get the whole “secured” lot thing—my last place had cameras everywhere, but someone still managed to swipe my rims. It’s wild how much faith we put in a gate or a keypad, but if people want in, they’ll find a way. Still, I’ll pay a few bucks extra for that peace of mind, even if it’s mostly psychological. Insurance paperwork is a nightmare though... feels like they want you to give up halfway through.
