Insurance is definitely a “gotcha” game sometimes, but you’re asking all the right questions.

Man, I feel this. As someone who’s had a couple dings on my record, I used to think accident forgiveness was just another way for them to squeeze more out of me. But after my last fender bender, my rates jumped way more than I expected. If your record’s clean, you’re probably fine skipping it, but if you’ve ever had a close call or two... it can be a lifesaver. Either way, you’re not wrong for questioning the extra cost—insurance is confusing as heck.

I’ve always wondered if accident forgiveness actually makes a difference in Ohio, since rates seem to jump for even minor stuff. Does anyone know if it covers all types of accidents, or just your first at-fault one? I’ve read some policies only “forgive” certain claims, which feels a bit misleading. Also, do classic or older cars factor into how much you’d save (or not) with it? Just curious if anyone’s seen a real-world benefit, or if it’s mostly peace of mind.

I’ve looked into accident forgiveness a few times, and honestly, it’s a mixed bag here in Ohio. Most of the time, it only covers your first at-fault accident—after that, you’re on your own. And yeah, some policies have all these weird exclusions, like not covering certain types of claims or drivers under a certain age. As for classic or older cars, I haven’t seen much savings there; insurers seem to focus more on your driving record than what you’re driving. For me, it’s mostly about peace of mind, but I’m not convinced it’s always worth the extra cost unless you’ve got a spotless record and want that cushion just in case.

I hear you on the “mixed bag” part. I’ve seen a lot of folks pay extra for accident forgiveness, thinking it’s a magic shield, but then get blindsided by all the fine print. The exclusions can be a real gotcha—especially for families with teen drivers or anyone who shares their car. I’ve noticed some companies even reset your “forgiveness” if you switch carriers, so you’re basically starting from scratch.

Honestly, I’m a bit skeptical about the value unless you’re the type who’s super cautious and rarely has claims. If you’ve already had a fender bender or two, the cost might outweigh the benefit. Out of curiosity, has anyone here actually had their rates stay flat after an at-fault accident because of forgiveness? Or did the insurer find another way to bump up your premium anyway? Sometimes I wonder if it’s more of a marketing gimmick than real protection...

Honestly, you nailed it with the “marketing gimmick” angle. I’ve seen folks pay for accident forgiveness, only to find their rates still creep up due to “other factors” after a claim—like losing a safe driver discount or getting dinged for comprehensive claims. It’s not always as clear-cut as the ads make it sound. If you’re already paying extra and have a teen on your policy, the math usually doesn’t work out in your favor. I’d say, read every bit of the fine print and maybe run the numbers before adding it on... sometimes just bumping up your deductible makes more sense.
