Feels like paying for two gym memberships and still never going.

That’s exactly how I feel about roadside! I had Geico’s roadside once—waited almost two hours for a tow in Queens. Not ideal. Honestly, I just keep jumper cables in the trunk now... cheaper and faster most days.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. Roadside assistance is one of those things that sounds great on paper, but when you actually need it, it’s a total gamble. Two hours for a tow in Queens? That’s rough. I had a similar experience with Progressive—sat on the side of the BQE for over an hour, and by the time help showed up, I’d already flagged down a random guy with jumper cables.

I keep my own gear in the trunk too—cables, tire inflator, even a cheap jack. It’s not just about saving money; it’s about not being stranded waiting for someone who may or may not show up. Insurance companies love to sell “peace of mind,” but half the time you’re better off being prepared yourself.

Still, I wouldn’t ditch roadside entirely if you drive long distances or late at night. Sometimes you really do need backup. But yeah, relying on it as your main plan? Not worth it in NYC traffic.

Man, the BQE is basically a test of patience and survival skills. I totally get keeping your own gear—NYC traffic waits for no one. I’ve had better luck with Geico’s roadside, but honestly, I still don’t trust it 100%. Sometimes you just gotta be your own hero out there.

Honestly, that’s the truth. I keep a jump starter and a tire inflator in my trunk—learned the hard way after waiting two hours for roadside on the BQE. I’ve got Progressive now, but I’m not sure their roadside is any better than Geico’s. Has anyone actually had a quick response from either? Or is it just luck of the draw with NYC traffic?

Man, I feel that. Had a flat on the FDR at 2am once, and both Geico and Progressive took forever—NYC traffic just eats response times alive. Ever tried AAA? I’ve heard mixed things but never pulled the trigger.
