My son just got his license last month, and I knew insurance would go up, but holy cow...didn't expect it to jump THAT much. We're in Nevada, and I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to soften the blow a bit. Heard something about good student discounts or defensive driving courses maybe helping? Curious if anyone else around here had a similar sticker shock moment when their teen started driving and what you did about it.

We had a similar experience when our daughter started driving two years ago. We're in California, but the sticker shock seems universal. One thing that helped significantly was enrolling her in a certified defensive driving course. It not only reduced our premium noticeably, but also made her a safer, more aware driverβwhich was my main priority anyway. Definitely worth looking into if your insurer recognizes it.
When my oldest got his license, I joked that the insurance company must've mistaken him for a Formula 1 driver. Seriously, I nearly spilled my coffee when I saw the new premium. We did the defensive driving course too, and it helped a bit. But honestly, the biggest relief came after he went a full year without any tickets or fender-benders. Hang in there...it does get better eventually.
