Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

I get why it feels weird to pay more for insurance than your car’s even worth. But here’s the thing—if someone with zero insurance totals your car and you end up in the ER, it’s not really about the car anymore, right? I’ve seen people with “junkers” get stuck with bills that’d make you wish you’d just bought a new car instead. Still, I do wonder if there’s a better way to handle it than just making everyone pay up front...

That’s a fair point—medical bills can get wild, and it’s easy to forget that insurance isn’t just about the car itself. I’ve always wondered, though, if there could be a tiered system based on vehicle value or usage. Like, does it really make sense for someone driving a 30-year-old beater to pay the same as someone with a new truck? Still, I get why Nebraska does it. The risk is bigger than just the car, especially if you’re unlucky enough to get hit by someone with nothing.

Yeah, I hear you—it does feel weird paying the same for a rusty old sedan as someone with a shiny new SUV. But honestly, after getting rear-ended by an uninsured driver last year, I’m glad Nebraska makes us carry that coverage. It’s not just about the car... it’s about protecting yourself from those worst-case scenarios.

I get where you’re coming from, but I still kinda grumble about it every time my bill comes due. Had a buddy who drove for years without insurance—never got caught, but man, if he’d hit someone, that would’ve been a nightmare. Guess it’s one of those things you don’t appreciate until you really need it.

Yeah, I hear you—insurance feels like paying for a parachute you hope never to use. But man, can you imagine getting rear-ended by someone with no coverage? That’s a road trip horror story waiting to happen... Nebraska’s law actually makes a weird kind of sense when you think about it. Ever try explaining uninsured motorist coverage to your grandma, though? That’s a whole other adventure.
