Title: Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

Ever had to actually use your uninsured motorist coverage?

Yeah, actually did once—got sideswiped by a guy who just took off. Never found him. The coverage helped, but honestly, the minimums barely covered my repairs. That’s when I realized the extra $10-15 isn’t just “being careful,” it’s kinda necessary if you want real protection. Minimums just don’t go far if things get ugly.

That’s exactly it. People act like the state minimums are “enough,” but have they actually priced out body work lately? Even a minor fender bender can eat up your whole coverage. I’ve upped mine after seeing a friend get stuck with a big bill from a hit-and-run. Why gamble over a few bucks a month? The risk just isn’t worth it.

Had a guy call in once thinking his “full coverage” would handle everything after a parking lot scrape. Turns out, his limits barely covered the other driver’s bumper, and his own car still needed $2k in work. It’s wild how fast costs add up, even for stuff that looks minor. I get why people want to save money, but sometimes cheaping out up front bites you later... Seen it more than I can count.

Title: Surprised by How Little “Full Coverage” Actually Covers

Man, I’ve seen this play out way too many times. Folks hear “full coverage” and think they’re invincible, but it’s really just a mix of whatever minimums you pick, right? The fine print gets you every time. I learned the hard way after a deer ran into my car outside of Lincoln—thought my policy would take care of it all, but my deductible was higher than I remembered and the payout didn’t even touch the rental car costs. Lesson learned.

It’s wild how fast those little dings add up. I had a buddy who barely tapped a curb in a parking lot—looked like nothing, but the alignment was off and the wheel got bent. $1,100 later, he was rethinking that “I’ll just get the cheapest plan” strategy. I get wanting to save money (who doesn’t?), but sometimes it’s just not worth the risk if you’re on the road a lot.

Honestly, I used to think uninsured motorist coverage was just another way for insurance companies to squeeze more out of us, but after hearing stories like yours and seeing what happens when someone hits you and bails, I get why Nebraska makes it mandatory. It’s not perfect, but at least it’s something.

I do wish insurance agents would be a little more upfront about what “full coverage” actually means. There’s just so much jargon and so many loopholes. It’s easy to miss stuff until you’re stuck with a bill you can’t afford. Makes me double-check my policy every time I renew now... just in case.

Anyway, you’re spot on—cheaping out on coverage can really come back to bite you. Sometimes peace of mind is worth the extra few bucks a month, especially if you’re out on the road as much as I am.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve had my share of tickets and fender benders, so “full coverage” is basically a myth for me—my premiums are through the roof, but even then, there’s always something not covered. The rental car thing gets me every time too. Has anyone actually found a policy that doesn’t nickel-and-dime you on rentals or glass? Or is that just wishful thinking?
