Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

It’s a real eye-opener, isn’t it? I ran into the same issue after a fender bender last year—my UM coverage barely scratched the surface of the repair costs on my Outback. It’s frustrating because you think you’re covered, but the policy limits haven’t kept up with what cars actually cost to fix now. I ended up adding an umbrella policy for some extra peace of mind, though it’s not perfect. The gap between what’s required and what’s needed is getting wider every year...

Umbrella policies are great for liability, but they usually don’t help with property damage to your own car after a crash—just something to watch for. I get what you’re saying about UM limits not keeping up, but honestly, bumping up your UM/UIM coverage is usually way cheaper than people expect. Not perfect, but it’s a practical step if you’re worried about repair costs. The minimums are just that—minimums... not really meant to cover everything these days.

That’s the understatement of the year. I’ve seen folks come in after a fender bender thinking their “full coverage” means they’re golden, only to find out their UM/UIM limits barely cover a trip to the ER, let alone a new bumper. It’s wild how cheap it can be to double or triple those limits, but people just don’t know. Honestly, I wish more drivers realized that “minimum” is insurance-speak for “barely enough to buy lunch.”

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, not everyone can just bump up their coverage without feeling it in their wallet. When I was shopping around, even a small increase in UM/UIM limits made my premium jump more than I expected. It’s not always as cheap as people say, especially if you’re under 25 or have a less-than-perfect record. Sometimes you just have to weigh the risk and hope for the best...

That’s exactly what happened to me last year. I figured bumping up my uninsured motorist coverage would be like, what, a few bucks a month? Nope. My rate shot up almost $20/month, and I’ve got a clean record. It’s wild how much age and zip code play into it too. I get why people just stick with the minimums, even if it’s not ideal. Sometimes you just have to crunch the numbers and hope you don’t get unlucky...
