Why I was surprised to learn Nebraska requires uninsured motorist coverage

- I get why people want uninsured motorist coverage, but honestly, I’m still not convinced it should be mandatory.
- Statistically, most drivers are insured, and I’d rather have the option to choose extra coverage based on my own risk tolerance.
- I’ve been comparing policies and the added cost isn’t huge, but it does add up if you’re already stretching your budget.
- Maybe it’s just me, but I’d prefer more flexibility instead of a blanket requirement for everyone.

I get where you’re coming from. I’ve got a couple old Chevys that barely leave the garage, and it bugs me to pay for coverage I’ll probably never use. That said, I’ve seen what happens when someone gets hit by an uninsured driver—it’s a mess. Still, I agree, a little more choice would be nice, especially for folks who keep their risk low or only drive occasionally. The extra cost isn’t huge, but it’s not nothing either.

Honestly, I hear this a lot—especially from folks with classic cars or “garage queens.” Here’s the thing:

- Uninsured motorist coverage is basically a safety net for when someone else drops the ball. Even careful drivers can get blindsided.
- The state figures it’s easier to just require it across the board instead of sorting out who “really” needs it.
- For cars that barely move, you might look into storage or limited-use policies. Not every company offers them, but sometimes you can cut costs if you’re not driving much.

I get that it feels like paying for something you’ll never use, but when you need it... man, you really need it. Insurance is weird like that—annoying until it isn’t.

Yeah, I get it—it does seem odd paying for coverage on a car that barely leaves the garage. But like you said, that one freak accident or hit-and-run could really sting if you’re not covered. I’ve looked into those storage policies too, but not every company is upfront about them. Sometimes you gotta ask directly or they’ll just keep you on the standard plan. Insurance always feels like a waste... until it doesn’t.

I hear you, but honestly, I’ve started questioning if it’s worth paying for full coverage on my old pickup that sits in the driveway most months. I get the “what if” argument, but after years of never filing a claim, it feels like tossing money down the drain. I actually called around and found a company that let me drop to just comprehensive when it’s parked—saved a chunk. Not every agent will mention it unless you push, though. Sometimes I wonder if the peace of mind is just a sales pitch...
