Do you really need extra insurance for a rental in Montana?

I hear you on those “loss of use” fees—nothing like getting hit with a bill for a car you’re not even driving. I’ve always been that guy who reads the fine print and still manages to miss something. Montana’s a different animal, for sure. Last time I was out there, my cell had zero bars for hours and I kept thinking, man, if I get a flat, it’s just me and the prairie dogs. I used to roll the dice and skip the extra insurance, but after seeing a friend’s rental bill double over some admin fee nonsense, I’m leaning more toward peace of mind these days. Ten bucks a day stings less than a week of arguing with insurance folks.

I know what you mean about the “loss of use” fees—those can sneak up on you. The Montana cell service thing is real, too. I once had to flag down a rancher after a deer ran out in front of my rental. He ended up calling the rental company for me from his landline, and that’s when I learned about those admin fees the hard way. Makes me wonder—has anyone actually had their personal insurance step in smoothly for a rental claim, or does it always turn into a paperwork mess?

Extra Insurance in Montana: Worth It or Not?

- Totally agree, those “loss of use” and admin fees are sneaky—most folks don’t realize their own insurance might not cover them.
- Personal insurance can step in, but it’s rarely seamless. I’ve seen claims drag on for weeks, especially if you’re dealing with out-of-state adjusters.
- Some credit cards offer coverage, but they almost always exclude “loss of use” and diminished value.
- Had a client once who thought his policy would handle everything, but he still got stuck paying for downtime while the rental was repaired.
- Honestly, if you’re renting in a place like Montana where help isn’t always close by, the peace of mind from the extra coverage can be worth it... even if it feels like a cash grab sometimes.

Extra Insurance in Montana: Worth Considering

- Renting high-end cars, I always dig into the fine print. The “loss of use” charges are a killer—

“most folks don’t realize their own insurance might not cover them.”
That’s spot on. My regular policy left me hanging once on a rental BMW... ended up eating a few hundred bucks in admin fees.

- Credit card coverage sounds good, but it’s usually just for the basics. Anything beyond scratches or dents and they’re out. Never seen one cover “diminished value” or downtime.

- Montana’s remote spots make things tricky. If you’re stranded, expect delays and headaches with adjusters who’ve never even been to the state.

- I hate paying extra, but for trips where I’m hours from the nearest town, I’ll cough up for the rental company’s coverage. It’s not cheap, but neither is waiting weeks for your insurance to sort things out while you’re on the hook.

- If you’re renting something fancy or just want zero hassle, it’s probably worth it. For a basic sedan in town? Maybe not... but read every line before you decide.

Extra Insurance for a Rental in Montana: Worth It or Nah?

Honestly, I’ve seen folks get burned thinking their regular insurance or shiny credit card covers everything, then get hit with “loss of use” or admin fees that feel like a bad joke. If you’re cruising around Glacier in a luxury SUV, that extra coverage is like bear spray—maybe you won’t need it, but you’ll be glad it’s there. For a Corolla in Billings? Eh, maybe skip it... unless you’re the type who loses sleep over what-ifs. Read every clause—they hide the wild stuff in the fine print.
