Do you really need extra insurance for a rental in Montana?

I get the temptation to skip the extra coverage, but after handling a few “wildlife meets rental car” claims, I’m a bit paranoid. That moose scenario isn’t even far-fetched in Montana. Credit cards help, but they don’t always cover everything—especially those “acts of nature” situations. For me, paying a bit more upfront beats the headache of arguing with multiple companies if something goes sideways.

Totally get where you're coming from. I used to think my credit card coverage was enough, but after reading the fine print, turns out they skip a lot of “natural hazard” stuff. Here’s how I look at it: first, check what your own insurance and cards actually cover (don’t just assume). Next, factor in the local risks—Montana’s got deer, moose, hail...the works. For me, it’s worth the peace of mind to pay a bit extra upfront instead of gambling on luck and paperwork later.

Yeah, that’s the thing—Montana’s basically a wildlife obstacle course. I’ve done a few road trips out there (not in my classic, no way I’m risking that), and every time I rent something, I end up staring at the insurance options for way too long. My regular auto policy technically covers rentals, but when you dig into the details, it’s like “except for this, and not that, and definitely not if a moose decides to sit on your hood.”

I get wanting to save a few bucks, but after seeing what hail did to a buddy’s rental last summer—looked like someone took a golf club to it—I’m leaning toward extra coverage. The paperwork alone if something happens is just...ugh. Not worth the headache.

Guess it comes down to how much risk you’re cool with. If you’re the type who likes rolling the dice, maybe skip it. Me? I’d rather spend my vacation driving than arguing with insurance adjusters.

Honestly, I’m right there with you. That line about “definitely not if a moose decides to sit on your hood” made me laugh, but it’s so true—there’s always some weird exception in the fine print. I used to skip the extra coverage too, but after seeing what hail did to my neighbor’s car (not even a rental), I started rethinking things. For me, it’s just not worth stressing over every little ding or scratch when I’m supposed to be relaxing. Sometimes paying a bit more upfront saves a lot of headaches later.

I get the hesitation—rental companies love to push every add-on, and half the time it feels like a money grab. But Montana’s weather is wild, and those “acts of nature” exclusions are real. I’ve had a rock chip turn into a $900 windshield bill before (not even my car). If you’re driving something nice or just want peace of mind, the extra coverage can be worth it. Still, I always double-check what my credit card or personal policy covers first... sometimes you’re already protected and don’t even know it.
