Do you really need extra insurance for a rental in Montana?

Extra insurance always feels like a racket until you’re the one with a deer-shaped dent in the hood, right? I’ve dug through the fine print before and yeah, a lot of those policies exclude anything that happens off paved roads. It’s buried in legalese, but it’s there—sometimes even if you’re just on a gravel shoulder. Honestly, I’d say if you know you’ll be off pavement a lot, it’s worth the peace of mind, even if it stings your wallet a bit. The hassle of arguing with insurance isn’t something I’d want to do again.

I totally get what you mean about the fine print—reading through all that legal jargon made my eyes cross. I’m renting up in Montana for the first time this summer, and I kept going back and forth on the extra coverage. Part of me thought it was just a money grab, but then my cousin hit a rock on a dirt road last year and spent weeks haggling with the rental company. That kind of hassle sounds way worse than paying a bit more upfront, honestly. Thanks for sharing your experience—it makes me feel a little better about not just skipping it.

That’s exactly what worries me—those random things you can’t plan for. I always try to break it down: 1) Check if my credit card covers rentals, 2) See what my regular car insurance does, 3) Actually read the exclusions (ugh). But I still wonder, does anyone know if Montana roads are really that rough? Or is it just certain areas? I’d hate to pay extra if I’m mostly sticking to highways.

Honestly, Montana highways are fine, but once you get off the main roads, it can get sketchy fast. I drove out near Glacier last summer—thought I was being careful, but a random gravel patch chipped the windshield. My insurance covered it, but the hassle with the rental company was a pain. If you’re sticking to highways, you’re probably okay, but those “just in case” moments seem to happen when you least expect them. I hate paying extra too, but sometimes it’s worth it for peace of mind.

Yeah, that’s the thing—Montana roads can surprise you. I’ve had my share of close calls with deer and random rocks, especially off the main drag. I usually skip the extra insurance, but after a busted tire last year, I’m starting to rethink it. Sometimes it’s just not worth the stress if something goes sideways.
