I’m actually shopping for my first policy right now, and this is exactly what I’m stuck on. Fast claims sound great, but I kinda like the idea of a company that knows who you are. At the end of the day, though, if they don’t pay out when you need it, none of that matters much. Still, waiting a week for help would stress me out...

- Same here. The idea of sitting around after something bad happens, just hoping the insurance company gets back to you, is honestly kind of nerve-wracking.
- I keep hearing that local companies like Shelter are more personal, but does that actually mean faster help? Or just that they know your name when you call?
- State Farm seems huge, which makes me wonder if you just get lost in the shuffle. But maybe their size means they've got the resources to process claims quicker?
- I’m also worried about those horror stories where people get denied for technicalities. Is one company more likely to actually pay out than the other?
- Price-wise, Shelter quoted me a bit less, but not by much. Not sure if it’s worth saving $50/year if it means slower service when something goes wrong.

Has anyone here actually had to file a claim with either? Did you feel like you were just another number, or did someone actually walk you through it? That’s my biggest fear—paying for years and then being left hanging when I finally need help.

Honestly, your worries make a lot of sense. Insurance is one of those things where you’re basically paying for peace of mind, but it’s only really tested when something goes sideways. I’ve never filed with Shelter, but I did have to go through the claims process with State Farm after a hail storm wrecked my roof a couple years back. Not gonna lie, it was a little stressful waiting for the adjuster, but they actually called me back pretty quick—like, within two days. The process itself was kind of a pain (lots of paperwork, obviously), but I never felt like I was just a number. The local agent checked in a couple times, which surprised me.

I get what you mean about the “big company” factor—sometimes you expect to get lost in the shuffle. But in my case, their system seemed to work in my favor. I’m not sure if that’s always true for everyone, though. I’ve heard mixed stories from friends—one had Shelter and said it took longer to get an answer, another swore by how personal their service felt. It’s hard to know if that’s just luck of the draw or if some companies actually do better.

About the technicalities thing...yeah, that’s always in the back of my mind too. I went through my policy line by line after hearing those horror stories. It’s probably worth doing that no matter who you pick. $50/year isn’t nothing, but if it means faster help when stuff hits the fan, maybe it’s worth paying a bit more for the bigger company. On the other hand, if you like knowing your agent and having someone local to talk to, Shelter could be worth it.

Either way, you’re not crazy for being stressed about waiting around after something bad happens. That’s basically everyone’s worst nightmare with insurance. At least you’re asking the right questions before picking one—most people don’t even bother until it’s too late.

One thing I’d push back on—bigger companies don’t always mean faster claims. I’ve seen State Farm take weeks in busy seasons, especially after big storms. Smaller outfits like Shelter can sometimes move quicker just because they’re handling fewer cases at once. It really depends on the local agent and how slammed they are. Reading the policy is smart, but I’d also call both agents and ask how claims are actually handled in your zip code...sometimes that makes all the difference.

Yeah, I’ve seen that too—my neighbor waited almost a month for State Farm to sort out her roof after last year’s hail. Meanwhile, my cousin with Shelter got his check before he even finished picking shingles out of the yard. It really does come down to how busy your local folks are. Calling around is a pain, but it beats sitting in limbo when you’re staring at a blue tarp on your house.
