- Totally get the worry about policy language—some of it reads like it was written just to confuse people.
- I’ve had State Farm a couple years. Their app’s great for basic stuff, but talking to a real person can take a while sometimes.
- Shelter’s local agent explained things way better when I was shopping around, but their online stuff felt kinda outdated.
- Has anyone had luck with Shelter handling claims quickly, or does it get bogged down like the bigger companies? That’s my main concern if something serious happens...

Shelter vs. State Farm for home insurance in Missouri—any strong opinions?

I hear you on the policy language—sometimes I feel like I need a law degree just to figure out what’s actually covered. With State Farm, I’ve noticed their app is solid for paying bills and checking stuff, but if you want a straight answer from a human, you might be waiting on hold long enough to memorize your own policy word-for-word. Not ideal if your roof’s leaking or something.

Shelter’s local vibe is honestly what got me to switch last year. My agent sat me down and walked through everything, translating “insurance-ese” into normal people talk. That was a breath of fresh air after dealing with call centers. Their website feels like it’s stuck in 2010, though—logging in is clunky and half the time I end up just calling anyway.

As for claims, I had a tree fall on my garage last spring (thanks, Midwest weather). Shelter had an adjuster out within three days and the check came about a week later. No runaround, no endless phone tag. I’ve heard stories about bigger companies dragging it out, but Shelter seemed to keep it moving. Maybe it’s the smaller company thing? They don’t have as many layers to get lost in.

That said, if you’re glued to your phone and want everything digital, State Farm probably wins there. But if you want someone who remembers your name and actually explains stuff without making your head spin, Shelter’s been good to me so far. Guess it depends on whether you value tech or that old-school personal touch more...

I get what you’re saying about Shelter’s local touch. I had a similar experience with a smaller insurer once (not Shelter, but same kind of vibe)—felt like I was actually talking to someone who knew my street, not just reading off a script. That said, my cousin swears by State Farm just because of the app and being able to file claims without waiting on the phone forever. But I’m always a little skeptical about how fast those big companies move when something actually goes wrong. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve heard enough horror stories about claims dragging on that I’m not sure slick tech makes up for it.

Has anyone dealt with both for an actual claim? Like, did State Farm ever surprise you and move quickly, or is the “big company = slow claims” thing mostly true? I keep thinking about switching but don’t want to trade one set of headaches for another...

I’ve actually had to file a claim with State Farm after a hailstorm last year. Honestly, I was bracing for a headache, but it wasn’t bad at all. The app made things easier, but what really surprised me was how quick the adjuster got out here—like, within two days. Maybe I just lucked out with a good rep, but it didn’t feel like I was lost in the shuffle. Still, I do miss that small-town vibe you get with local companies... sometimes it’s nice when they remember your name, you know?

I get what you mean about missing that personal touch. I’ve been with Shelter for years, mostly because my dad swore by them, but I’ll admit their tech isn’t as slick as State Farm’s. Last time I had roof damage, it took a week just to get someone out here. They did remember my dog’s name though, which was weirdly comforting. Do you think the speed of service is worth trading off that local feel? Or does it all just come down to who actually pays out when it matters?
