Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

That’s a fair point, but I do wonder how much it depends on the specific insurer. Some seem stricter than others about what counts as “occasional.” Has anyone actually read the fine print on their policy? I skimmed mine and honestly, it’s not super clear.

Yeah, the fine print is a headache. I’ve actually tried to read through mine (State Farm), and it’s vague about “occasional use”—like, what does that even mean? Once a month? Twice a week? It really does seem like some insurers are more forgiving than others. Honestly, I’d rather just add my friend if they’re driving more than once in a blue moon. Not worth risking a denied claim over some technicality.

Yeah, that “occasional use” thing is so vague it’s almost useless. I’ve asked my agent before and got a super wishy-washy answer—like, “it depends.” Not helpful. I’m already paying extra because of a couple tickets, so I’m always looking for ways to keep costs down, but man, the idea of a denied claim freaks me out. Is it really worth saving a few bucks if they’ll just find a loophole? I’d rather be safe than sorry, even if it means coughing up a bit more each month.

Totally get this. I’ve been burned before—had a fender bender with a buddy driving and the insurance tried every trick to avoid paying. “Occasional use” turned into “well, he drove it twice last month, that’s not occasional…” Not worth the gamble if you ask me. I’d rather pay a bit more than risk getting stuck with a massive bill. Peace of mind is worth it, especially with my luck lately.

That’s exactly what worries me. Insurance companies love those gray areas. I’ve always just added friends to my policy if they’re gonna drive more than once or twice—costs a bit more, but at least there’s no arguing about “occasional.” Has anyone actually had a claim go through under permissive use without any hassle? Or is it always a headache?
