Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I’ve never bothered calling my insurance for a one-off. In MN, permissive use is usually covered unless your policy specifically says otherwise.

if it’s a one-off, like a weekend, I just let my insurance know ahead of time
Maybe I’m just rolling the dice, but so far, no issues. I’d only add someone if they’re driving it a lot or live with me. Otherwise, seems like overkill.

I get the logic, but I always wonder about the “what if” scenarios—like, what if your friend gets into a fender bender and the insurance tries to deny it because you didn’t notify them? Has anyone actually had a claim denied for permissive use in MN? Just seems like a gray area...

It really does feel like a gray area, but honestly, most standard MN policies cover permissive use unless you’re lending your car out every weekend. I’ve seen claims get slowed down for “regular” drivers not being listed, but outright denied? Super rare unless there’s something sketchy going on. If you’re just letting a buddy borrow the car once in a blue moon, you’re probably fine. If it’s more often, adding them might save you a headache (and maybe some cash) down the road.

Yeah, I’d agree that most policies in MN are pretty forgiving with permissive use, but there’s always that fine print. I’ve seen situations where someone thought they were covered, but the insurer pushed back because the “friend” was basically using the car every week. It’s not common for claims to get denied outright, but delays and extra questions? Happens more than people realize. If it’s a regular thing, adding them is just less hassle... and sometimes cheaper than a surprise surcharge after a claim.

Had a buddy borrow my car for a couple months while his was in the shop. At first, I figured permissive use would cover it—seemed straightforward enough. But when he got a parking ticket and then a minor fender bender, my insurer started asking a lot more questions than I expected. Like you said,

“delays and extra questions? Happens more than people realize.”
In hindsight, should’ve just added him. The hassle wasn’t worth it, and it made me rethink how “forgiving” these policies really are.
