Letting friends drive your car in MN: better to add them or rely on permissive use?

Yeah, I’ve seen people get burned thinking “permissive use” covers more than it really does. Had a buddy lend his car to his roommate for a week—roommate rear-ended someone, and the insurance company dragged their feet because it wasn’t just a quick errand. Honestly, if someone’s using your car more than once or twice, just add them. It’s not worth the headache if something goes sideways.

Yeah, I’ve seen this play out more than once—people think “permissive use” is a free pass, but insurance companies love to nitpick if someone’s basically borrowing your car for days at a time. The gray area is real. If it’s just a one-off, fine, but if your friend’s gonna be behind the wheel more than occasionally, putting them on the policy saves so much hassle. Claims get messy fast otherwise. Not worth the gamble, honestly.

Yeah, I’ve run into this too—my cousin borrowed our van for a week and the insurance company started asking questions when he got in a fender bender. They really do look for any reason not to pay out. If it’s just a quick errand or two, maybe it’s fine, but more than that? Not worth risking your rates going up or getting stuck with a bill. Adding them is usually cheaper in the long run, even if it feels like a hassle upfront.

Honestly, I learned this the hard way. Let my buddy borrow my car for “just a weekend”—next thing you know, my insurance agent is grilling me like I’m on a game show. Not worth the stress. If they’re driving more than once, just add them... your wallet will thank you later.

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from. The “permissive use” thing sounds good in theory, but in practice? It’s a headache if anything goes wrong. Minnesota’s pretty clear about primary coverage following the car, not the driver, but insurance companies love to find loopholes if they can. If your friend gets in an accident—even if it’s not their fault—you might be looking at higher premiums or even a denied claim if the insurer thinks you’re skirting the rules.

I used to think it was fine as long as it was just once or twice, but after seeing a coworker get stuck with a big bill because his “occasional driver” turned into a regular thing, I’m all for just adding people up front. Sure, it takes a phone call and maybe a few extra bucks, but compared to the stress (and possible financial mess) of an uncovered accident? No contest. Even if your friend’s super careful, stuff happens. Better safe than sorry...
