How I managed to stack discounts for military student drivers

I hear you—it can feel like a wild goose chase sometimes. Last year, I actually managed to stack a military discount with a student driver one for my kid, but it took a lot of back-and-forth and paperwork. Ended up saving about $150 for the year, which was more than I expected, but honestly, it felt like pulling teeth. Most of the time, it’s just small amounts that barely cover a tank of gas. Still, if you’ve got the patience and the right combo, it can add up... just not as much as those ads make it sound.

Yeah, the ads always hype up the “big savings,” but in reality, it’s usually a grind. The trick is knowing which discounts actually stack—some companies are picky about combos. I’ve seen folks miss out just because they didn’t ask twice or send in the right docs. If you’re willing to chase down the paperwork, though, it’s better than nothing. Just don’t expect miracles.

I hear you about the paperwork grind—sometimes it feels like you need a PhD just to figure out which discounts actually overlap. Has anyone ever gotten a straight answer from customer service on this? I swear, half the time I get different info depending on who picks up the phone. Is there some secret handshake or magic phrase that gets them to spill the real stacking rules?

I’ve tried to combine military and student discounts before, and it was like playing discount Tetris. One rep said “sure, no problem,” then the next person said “nope, can’t do that.” Do you just keep calling until someone says yes, or is there a better way? And what’s the weirdest document you’ve had to dig up for proof? I once had to send in a scan of my student ID, my class schedule, and a letter from my grandma (okay, maybe not the last one... but it felt like it).

Honestly, I’ve never gotten a straight answer from customer service either. It’s like they’re making it up as they go. I’ve had reps tell me “we don’t stack discounts,” then someone else gives me both without blinking. Ever tried just asking for a supervisor right away? Sometimes that cuts through the nonsense, but sometimes they’re just as clueless. Has anyone actually seen the official policy in writing, or is it all just up to whoever answers the phone that day?

I totally get where you’re coming from—trying to pin down a clear answer is like chasing smoke. I’ve asked for the policy in writing too, and all I got was a generic FAQ link that didn’t even mention stacking discounts. It’s honestly baffling. I wonder if it’s intentional, like they want to keep things vague so they can be flexible (or not) depending on who you talk to. Have you ever tried emailing instead of calling? Sometimes written responses are a bit more consistent, but even then, it’s hit or miss.
