Been shopping around lately since my current insurance is getting kinda pricey, and I've narrowed it down to State Farm and Progressive. Both seem pretty solid, but I'm having a hard time deciding. State Farm seems to have a good rep for customer service and local agents, which I kinda like—makes it feel more personal, you know? But Progressive's online tools and discounts look pretty tempting too, especially since I'm usually glued to my phone anyway, lol.

I've heard mixed things about both when it comes to claims handling in Michigan winters (ugh, potholes anyone?), so that's making me hesitate. Anyone had experiences with either of these companies here in MI? Good or bad, I'd appreciate hearing about it before I pull the trigger.

I'm in the same boat—first-time insurance buyer here, and I've been comparing these two as well. A couple things I've noticed:

- State Farm definitely feels more personal with local agents, which might help if you're new to insurance (like me) and have lots of questions.
- Progressive's app and online tools are pretty slick, especially if you prefer handling stuff digitally. Plus, their Snapshot discount could be worth it if you're a careful driver.
- Claims-wise, my cousin had Progressive last winter and said they handled his pothole damage pretty quickly, but he did mention communication was mostly online rather than face-to-face.

Still weighing it myself though...

Yeah, I agree the digital tools are convenient, but have you thought about how comfortable you'd be relying mostly on online communication if something serious happens? I'm a cautious driver myself, but Michigan winters can be brutal—black ice, potholes, you name it. Last year, my coworker had a fender-bender during a snowstorm and said having a local agent (State Farm in his case) made things smoother because he could actually talk to someone face-to-face when he was stressed out.

I guess it comes down to your comfort level: would you rather have quick digital convenience or the reassurance of personal interaction when things get tricky? Also, does anyone know if Progressive's Snapshot discount is significant enough to offset potentially higher winter-related claims here in Michigan? Still trying to figure that one out myself...

That's a good point about the comfort factor during stressful situations. Personally, I've found Progressive's digital tools pretty reassuring even in tricky moments—had a minor slide-off last winter (thankfully nothing serious), and their app made filing the claim straightforward. But I totally get why face-to-face interaction might feel more comforting when things go sideways. As for Snapshot, my discount was decent, but I'm not sure it'd fully balance out higher winter claims... guess it depends on your driving habits.
