Defensive driving? Barely moved the needle.

Yeah, same here—took the course, hoped for a miracle, but my wallet barely noticed. Michigan rates just have a mind of their own. At this point, I just cross my fingers every renewal...

I get where you’re coming from—Michigan insurance rates are just wild, and it feels like nothing really helps. But I gotta say, when I got dinged for a minor fender bender a few years back, the defensive driving course actually did knock a little off my premium. Not a ton, but enough to notice. Maybe it depends on the company? Or maybe they just liked that I was trying to be proactive, who knows.

That said, I’ve heard from friends who had DUIs that it’s a whole different ballgame. Defensive driving won’t even make a dent if you’ve got that on your record. One buddy of mine had his rates triple overnight after his DUI—no exaggeration. He tried everything: courses, switching companies, even moving to a different ZIP code. Nothing really worked until enough time passed and it finally dropped off his record.

I do wonder sometimes if there’s some secret sauce to getting rates down in Michigan, but I haven’t found it yet. Feels like you’re just at the mercy of the system, especially if you’ve got anything major on your record. Still, I keep doing the little stuff—no tickets in years, park in safe spots, all that jazz—just in case it helps. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but I figure every bit counts... or at least makes me feel like I’m not totally powerless.

Anyway, I wouldn’t write off defensive driving entirely, but yeah, for big stuff like DUIs? It’s probably not gonna save you much. Michigan just does its own thing when it comes to insurance math.

That’s wild—moving didn’t even help? I always thought changing your address could at least shave a little off. Makes me wonder if there’s any point in shopping around after a DUI or if you’re just stuck paying through the nose no matter what. Has anyone actually found a company that’s more forgiving, or is it just wishful thinking?

I’ve been down this road with a buddy—he tried every trick in the book, too. Honestly, after a DUI in Michigan, most companies just see the conviction and hike your rates, no matter where you live. Some smaller insurers might be a tad more lenient, but it’s rare. Time really is the only thing that helps.

Yeah, it’s rough. Once that DUI hits your record, most companies just see you as a risk. Here’s what I’d do: 1) Shop around anyway, even if it feels pointless. 2) Take a defensive driving course—sometimes that helps a bit. 3) Wait it out, because time really is the only fix. Has anyone actually seen their rates drop before the conviction fell off their record?
