How bad does a DUI mess up car insurance in Michigan?

I get what you’re saying about the “unicorn” rates. I’ve been down that road - thought I scored a deal after my DUI, but when I actually looked at the policy, the coverage was bare bones. Not worth it if you end up paying out of pocket for something stupid later.

just gotta be careful - sometimes that “unicorn” rate comes with less coverage than you’d expect.

That’s the part people miss. Michigan’s already a pain with insurance, and after a DUI, it’s like they’re just waiting to jack up your rates for any excuse. I did see a drop after three years, but only because I switched companies and basically started from scratch. The old carrier wouldn’t budge, no matter how clean my record was after.

Bottom line, you can get a break eventually, but you have to dig through a lot of fine print and be ready to walk away from “deals” that aren’t really deals. It’s a grind, but not impossible if you’re stubborn enough.

Couldn’t agree more about those “deals” that turn out to be junk policies. I got burned once - thought I’d found a loophole, but ended up with a deductible so high it was basically useless. Michigan insurance is already complicated, then you add a DUI and it’s like the deck’s stacked against you. I do think shopping around helps, but you really have to read every line. Sometimes it feels like they’re banking on people being too tired to notice the catch...

You nailed it - those “cheap” policies are usually cheap for a reason. High deductibles, barely any coverage, and all sorts of fine print. It’s like they’re hoping you’ll just skim and sign. Seen it too many times.

As for DUIs, you’re right, Michigan’s already a headache with insurance, and a DUI just makes it worse. Premiums can double or even triple overnight, and some carriers will drop you flat out. A lot of people don’t realize how long that sticks with you, either - could be years before you see rates come down, if at all.

You mention shopping around, which is smart, but honestly, after a DUI, your options shrink fast. Most of the big names won’t even touch you for a while. Have you ever tried going through one of those “high-risk” specialty insurers? Curious if anyone’s actually had a decent experience with them, or if it’s just more of the same - overpriced policies with hidden traps.

Also, did your deductible get jacked up after the DUI, or was it already sky-high? Sometimes they’ll hike that too, just to cover their own risk. Seems like every time you think you’ve found a loophole, there’s a catch buried somewhere.

Ever notice how the paperwork gets thicker every year? Almost like they want you to give up halfway through reading it...

Yeah, after my cousin’s DUI, his insurance went through the roof - like, not just a little bump, but almost triple. He had to go with one of those high-risk companies and the deductible was brutal. The paperwork was a nightmare too... felt like they wanted him to mess up somewhere. Michigan’s already expensive, but this just made it ridiculous.

Yeah, it’s rough. I’ve seen folks get hit with those crazy premiums after a DUI - Michigan’s no joke about it either. Had a buddy who thought he’d just pay a little more, but nope… his rate nearly quadrupled and he had to jump through hoops just to keep coverage. The paperwork is a pain, but honestly, the real kicker is how long it sticks with you. Not easy to bounce back from that one.
