I've been thinking lately about how little I'm actually driving these days, you know, working from home and all that. My car's basically become a driveway ornament most of the week, lol. Anyway, I started looking into ways to cut down on insurance costs since I'm barely using the thing.

Seems like there's two main options: either switch to one of those pay-per-mile insurance plans or stick with a regular policy but get a discount for low mileage. The pay-per-mile thing sounds kinda cool—like you literally only pay for what you drive—but I'm worried it might get complicated or end up costing more if I suddenly have a month where I drive a lot. On the other hand, low mileage discounts seem simpler, but maybe they're not as big of a saving?

I'm kinda torn here. Has anyone tried either of these options? Curious which one worked out better for you in terms of savings and convenience.

I went through a similar situation last year when my company shifted permanently to remote work. My mileage dropped significantly, so I started exploring options to trim down insurance expenses.

This was exactly my concern too. After some research, I decided to give the pay-per-mile plan a shot since my driving was consistently low. Honestly, the savings were pretty noticeable right away. But...there was one month when family visited, and we took several longer trips. That month's bill definitely jumped higher than expected—not outrageous, but enough to make me reconsider.

Eventually, I switched back to a regular policy with a low mileage discount. The savings aren't quite as dramatic each month, but it's consistent and predictable, which suits my budgeting style better. If your driving habits are steady and predictable, pay-per-mile could be great; otherwise, the simplicity of a traditional low mileage discount might be less stressful in the long run.
