I’ve always wondered why insurance companies get away with these vague definitions—like, who decided a side mirror isn’t “structural”? That’s the kind of thing that makes me question what else is hiding in the fine print. I’ve had policies where I thought I was covered for hail damage, only to find out there was some weird clause about “acts of nature” that excluded half the stuff I assumed was standard.

The preferred repair shop thing is another one that bugs me. Last time I had a fender bender, my insurer tried to steer me to a shop across town I’d never heard of. I pushed back and got them to let me use my usual mechanic, but it took way more effort than it should’ve.

Curious if anyone’s actually had a positive experience with one of the big national companies in Kentucky? Or is it really just about finding the least-bad option and reading every word yourself? Sometimes I think the smaller local outfits might be more flexible, but then again, maybe that’s just wishful thinking...

That’s the kind of thing that frustrates me too. The fine print can get ridiculous, and honestly, it shouldn’t be this hard to figure out what you’re actually paying for. The “preferred shop” push is a pain—legally, you’ve got the right to pick your own, but they sure don’t make it easy. In my experience, some of the bigger companies do have solid claims service, but you’re right: it’s often about finding the least-bad fit and double-checking every detail. Smaller locals can be more flexible, but sometimes they just don’t have the resources when things go sideways. It’s a trade-off either way...
