That’s been my experience too. Those apps just don’t get rural driving—like, how are you supposed to avoid sudden stops when there’s a combine in the road or a deer pops out of nowhere? I tried one for a few months and it dinged me every time I slowed down for gravel or a sharp turn. Honestly, I’d rather stick with a company that actually looks at my record instead of some app’s idea of “safe.” It’s frustrating, especially after years of careful driving.

Couldn’t agree more about those apps missing the mark. Out here, you’re dodging tractors, wildlife, and potholes the size of small craters—none of that gets factored in. I tried one of those “smart” trackers and it flagged me for “aggressive braking” when I had to slam on the brakes for a loose calf. Ridiculous. Insurance companies should actually care about your years behind the wheel, not just what some city-designed app spits out.

- Had the same thing happen last spring. Deer jumped out, I hit the brakes, and the app dinged me for “unsafe driving.” Like I’m supposed to just plow through?
- These apps seem built for folks who never leave paved roads. Out here, you’re dealing with gravel, mud, and critters—none of that gets counted.
- My insurance hiked up after I tried their “safe driver” program. They said I braked too hard and took corners too fast. Reality: I was avoiding a combine and a washed-out culvert.
- Been driving since the late 70s, never had a real accident. Doesn’t seem to matter. They just want the data from the app, not your actual record.
- Tried shopping around, but every company wants you to use their tracker now. Even the “discounts” barely make a dent once you hit 65.
- Honestly, feels like they’re just looking for reasons to bump up rates. Years of experience behind the wheel should count for something, but it’s like they forget all that once you hit a certain age.

Not sure what the answer is, but I’m about ready to go back to paying cash and skipping all the “smart” stuff. At least then I know what I’m getting.

It’s wild how these trackers are supposed to make things “fair” but end up punishing you for reacting to real hazards. I get that insurance companies want data, but it’s like they’re ignoring the actual conditions we drive in out here. Hitting the brakes for a deer or a tractor isn’t reckless—it’s just common sense.

I’m still learning, but even my instructor says those apps don’t account for rural driving at all. They’re built for city traffic, not gravel roads or farm equipment. It’s frustrating when your years of safe driving get tossed aside because an algorithm thinks you’re dangerous.

Honestly, I’d skip the tracker if you can. Some smaller local insurers might not require them yet—worth checking out, even if it takes some digging. And yeah, the discounts are pretty underwhelming once you factor in the rate hikes for stuff you can’t control. Feels like experience should matter more than what some app spits out.

That’s exactly it. Out here, you can’t go a week without something popping up in the road—deer, tractors, even random dogs. I’ve had my tracker ding me for “hard braking” just because a turkey flew out of the ditch. Does anyone know if these companies actually look at the data, or is it all just automated? Kinda feels like the tech is working against us more than helping. Has anyone actually seen a real discount from using these things, or is it mostly hype?
