Finding affordable car insurance after 65 in kansas - anyone else struggling?
Sometimes the smaller outfits fly under the radar with less tech. It’s a pain, but every once in a while you’ll find one that doesn’t push the app.
I’ve tried a couple of those smaller companies, but honestly, their rates weren’t much better for me. Plus, some of them still wanted all sorts of paperwork and hoops to jump through - just a different kind of hassle. I get not wanting to be tracked, but at this point, the tech feels baked in everywhere. Maybe I’m just tired of chasing unicorns, but I’m starting to think paying a little more for less hassle might be worth it.

That’s honestly a pretty fair take. I’ve seen a lot of folks get burned out trying to hunt down the “perfect” deal, only to end up with more headaches than savings. The paperwork thing is real - sometimes those smaller companies are even *worse* about it, since they don’t have the streamlined systems the big guys do. It’s like, sure, you’re not being tracked by an app, but now you’re faxing in forms and waiting on snail mail. Is that really better?
I do wonder, though - have you tried talking to a local agent (not just the online stuff)? Sometimes they can cut through some of the nonsense, or at least explain why certain hoops exist. Not saying it’s a magic fix, but every now and then you get someone who actually cares and can point you to a policy that fits without all the tech. Then again, maybe that’s just another unicorn.
The tech is definitely everywhere now. Even the companies that say they’re “old school” are quietly rolling out tracking or at least pushing online portals. I get why people are wary, but it’s tough to avoid unless you’re willing to pay a premium or deal with more hassle.
At the end of the day, I think you’re onto something - sometimes it’s worth a few extra bucks just to not have to jump through flaming hoops. Peace of mind has value too, right? I guess the trick is figuring out where your line is between cost and convenience. It’s not always obvious, and it can shift as you get older or your needs change.
If you do stumble across a company that actually makes things easier without jacking up the price, let us know. Until then, I wouldn’t beat yourself up for wanting less hassle, even if it costs a bit more. Sometimes “good enough” really is good enough.

- 100% agree. I tried a “mom and pop” insurer last year - ended up mailing in a check like it was 1995.
- The “peace of mind” tax is real. Sometimes I just want to pay and be done, not play detective with paperwork.
- Local agents can help, but I’ve had a few who just wanted to upsell me on stuff I didn’t need. Not always a win.
- At this point, I’ll pay a little more if it means no phone trees or endless forms. My time’s worth something too, right?
Couldn’t agree more about smaller companies making things harder. Last time I tried one, I had to fax in forms - who even owns a fax machine now? The “personal touch” always sounds nice until you’re stuck waiting for someone to call you back for three days. I’m all for saving money, but if it means jumping through hoops, I’ll pass. And those agents pushing extra coverage drive me nuts... I just want the basics, not a lecture. At this point, paying a bit more for less hassle is worth it - life’s too short for insurance headaches.
I get where you're coming from, but I’ve actually had better luck with some of the smaller outfits. Yeah, the paperwork can be a pain - last year I had to dig out a scanner I hadn’t used in ages - but once I got set up, the rates were way better than the big names. For me, saving a few hundred bucks a year is worth a bit of hassle upfront. I guess it depends on how much patience you’ve got for all the red tape.
