Honestly, I’m new to this and wasn’t sure digital proof was even accepted everywhere in Iowa. I had this weird fear of getting pulled over and my phone dying or something glitching with the app. Here’s what I do: I keep a screenshot of my insurance card saved in my photos, just in case the app doesn’t load. Might be overkill, but I’d rather not risk it. Paper backup in the glovebox too, because you never know.
Iowa does accept digital proof, but I totally get the anxiety about tech failing at the worst moment. I do something similar—screenshot in my phone, plus a paper copy tucked in with my registration. Once had my phone freeze up during a road trip... not fun. Backup plans are never overkill when you’re on the road.
I always wonder if officers actually prefer one type of proof over another. Like, do they get annoyed if you hand them your phone instead of a paper card? Or maybe they're just used to both by now... anyone ever had a cop react weird about it?
I’ve actually wondered about this too. From what I’ve seen, most officers don’t seem to care whether it’s digital or paper, as long as it’s legit and easy to read. I did have one officer kind of squint at my phone like he was trying to solve a puzzle, but he didn’t say anything negative. I guess the only real issue is if your phone dies at the wrong moment... then you’re out of luck. Paper never runs out of battery, but it does get lost in glove boxes pretty easily.

Man, that’s the story of my life. I swear, every time I actually need my paper insurance card, it’s either buried under six months of fast food napkins or somehow managed to migrate into the backseat. I’ve tried keeping a digital copy on my phone, but like you said, battery anxiety is real—especially in winter when my phone dies if I look at it funny.
Had a cop once just kind of stare at my phone, then hand it back like he was passing me a hot potato. Didn’t seem to mind, but I got the vibe he’d rather see something tangible. Now I just keep both, and hope at least one survives the chaos in my car.
Honestly, there’s no good answer. Paper gets lost, phones die, and apparently glove boxes are black holes for important documents.
