Would you risk a higher deductible to lower your insurance bill?
I get where you’re coming from. I drive a lot too, and honestly, the more I’m out there, the less comfortable I am with a high deductible. Statistically, my odds just aren’t great... I’d rather pay a bit more monthly than risk a big bill after an accident.
That makes a lot of sense. The more time you spend on the road, the higher the probability something unexpected will happen - no matter how careful you are. I log thousands of miles every year, and honestly, I’ve seen just about every scenario play out, from minor fender benders to wildlife darting out at the worst possible moment. Even with a clean driving record, I’m not convinced a high deductible is worth the risk for frequent drivers.
One thing I’ve noticed is that people sometimes underestimate the real cost of an accident. It’s not just your deductible - it’s rental cars, time off work, and all those little hassles that add up. Paying a bit more each month feels like a small price for peace of mind, especially when you’re far from home or on a long trip.
I get that some folks prefer to roll the dice if they hardly drive or have a big emergency fund set aside. But for those of us who are practically living in our cars? Lower deductible just seems like the safer bet... even if it means sacrificing a few extra bucks each month.
I hear you on all those hidden costs - my last fender bender ended up costing me way more in Uber rides and missed work than the deductible itself. I used to think I was saving money with a higher deductible, but after that headache, I switched to a lower one and just grumbled about the extra monthly charge. Honestly, if you’re clocking serious miles, it feels like playing roulette every time you get behind the wheel.
One thing I still wrestle with: do you guys ever try to negotiate with your insurance about rental coverage or roadside assistance? I feel like they always try to nickel and dime on the “extras,” but those are exactly what end up saving your bacon when something goes sideways. Curious if anyone’s actually managed to get a better deal or if I’m just dreaming...
I totally get the struggle with those “extras.” When I was shopping around, I actually asked about bundling roadside and rental, and one rep knocked a few bucks off since I was on the fence. Didn’t feel like a huge win, but hey, every bit helps. It’s wild how much those little add-ons matter when you’re stuck on the side of the road...
Bundling can be a bit of a mixed bag, honestly. I’ve seen folks save a chunk, but sometimes those “discounts” just make the extras seem cheaper than they really are. Have you ever broken down what you’re actually paying for each add-on? Sometimes roadside is just a couple bucks, but rental jumps up fast. I’m always wary when reps start knocking off a few dollars here and there - are they really giving you value or just making it look like a deal?
And about being stuck on the side of the road... it’s true, in that moment, you’d pay just about anything to get help quickly. But do you use those services enough to justify paying every month? Or would it make more sense to set aside a little emergency fund and skip the add-ons? I’ve seen people go years without using roadside assistance, then finally need it and realize their policy barely covers what they thought it would.
Curious - did you check if your credit card or auto manufacturer already tosses in some of those perks? A lot of people double-pay without realizing.
