Would you risk a higher deductible to lower your insurance bill?

Honestly, I’ve crunched the numbers a few times and for me, the “huge savings” with a higher deductible just aren’t there. Like, sure, you save a few bucks a month, but if you ever do need to file a claim, that’s a big chunk out of pocket. I drive a beater and don’t rack up a ton of miles, so I stick with a middle-ground deductible. Peace of mind is worth a little extra, at least for my stress levels... but if you’re sitting on a fat emergency fund, maybe it’s less of a big deal.

I get what you mean about peace of mind - honestly, I’m the type who’d rather pay a bit more each month than stress about a big bill if something goes wrong. I’ve seen friends get hit with those high deductibles and it’s not pretty, especially when you’re already tight on cash. Do you think the type of car you drive makes a difference in your decision? Like, would you risk a higher deductible if you had a newer car, or does that just make it scarier?

I totally get the “peace of mind” thing, but honestly, if I had a brand new car, I’d be terrified to risk a higher deductible. Like, what if someone dings it in the parking lot?

would you risk a higher deductible if you had a newer car, or does that just make it scarier?
For me, it’s definitely scarier. But then again, is it just me or do older cars seem to attract more bad luck? Maybe it’s just my luck with my old Civic... anyone else feel like their car’s age changes how much they worry about this stuff?

- 100% agree, the thought of a higher deductible on a new car is nerve-wracking. I just got a new Mazda last year and every time I park at the grocery store, I’m hyper-aware of stray shopping carts.

- For me, newer cars feel like more of an investment, so I’m way more cautious. With my old Corolla, I honestly didn’t stress as much - maybe because a scratch or dent just blended in with all the others.

- I think you’re onto something about older cars attracting more “bad luck.” My last car seemed to be a magnet for weird accidents... like, someone once backed into it in my own driveway. But at the same time, with an old beater, I actually felt less anxious because the stakes were lower. If something happened, it wasn’t as big a deal.

- Higher deductible = lower monthly payment, sure, but with a new car, I’d rather pay a bit more each month for the peace of mind. If something happens, I don’t want to be out $1k or more just to fix a fender bender.

- The only time I’d consider raising the deductible is if my emergency fund was solid and I knew I could cover it without stress. Otherwise, it’s just not worth the risk for me.

- It’s funny how your mindset shifts depending on what you’re driving. When my car was older, I figured “eh, whatever happens happens.” Now with something shiny and new? Total shift - I’m parking at the far end of every lot and eyeing every car that pulls in next to me.

It’s probably not just you - car age definitely changes how much you worry about this stuff. The anxiety is real...

I totally get the anxiety with a new car - my last upgrade had me double-checking every parking spot for potential dings. For me, it comes down to how often I’m on the road. As a daily commuter, I feel like my odds of needing to pay that higher deductible are just... higher. Anyone else factor in how much they drive when deciding on deductible amounts?
