Confused about Illinois car insurance rules—anyone else?

Yeah, the rental reimbursement thing is honestly kind of a joke. $25 a day barely covers a compact car around here, let alone anything close to what I actually drive. In my experience, insurance only covers “comparable” if you’re willing to pay extra for higher limits, and even then it’s a stretch. I had to settle for a tiny sedan for two weeks once—felt like I was borrowing my kid’s car. It’s wild how the stuff they call “optional” ends up being the only thing you need when things go sideways.

That’s exactly it. I’ve always wondered if these “optional” add-ons are just a way for insurance to dodge actually covering what matters. Has anyone actually gotten a rental that matched their own car, or is that just marketing?

I’ve never had a rental that was even close to my own car, honestly. Last time I had an accident, my policy “covered” a rental, but it was some tiny compact when I drive a mid-size SUV. The agent said it’s “based on availability,” which feels like code for “good luck.” Maybe if you pay for the highest tier add-on, but I’m not convinced it’s worth it.

Yeah, that’s been my experience too. Even when I specifically asked for something similar to my sedan, I got a tiny hatchback. I’ve read the fine print and most policies just promise “transportation,” not a match. It’s frustrating, especially if you need the space or features you’re used to.

I get why that’s annoying, but is it always that bad? I’ve been looking into policies, and some companies seem to offer “like kind and quality” rental coverage—maybe it’s pricier, but is it actually better? I’m wondering if it’s worth paying extra for those plans, or if it’s just marketing. Has anyone had luck getting something close to their own car, or is it really just a roll of the dice?
