Someone smashed my parked car—deal with insurance or call the cops?

Honestly, I don’t get why people skip the police report. If your car’s been hit while parked, I’d call the cops first, then deal with insurance. The report gives you proof and a timeline—insurance companies love that. Photos and receipts are good, but if there’s no official record, they’ll find a way to drag things out. Had a buddy who skipped the report and it turned into a nightmare. Why risk it?

You’re not wrong—police reports make life easier for everyone. But I’ll play devil’s advocate for a sec:

- Sometimes cops won’t even come out for minor fender benders, especially in busy cities. You end up with a “file online” situation, which isn’t always as official as you’d hope.
- Insurance *can* process claims without a police report if you’ve got solid photos, dashcam footage, or witness info. Not ideal, but it happens more than you’d think.
- That said, if there’s any hint the other driver might dispute what happened, the official report is gold. No question.

Had a client once who skipped the report because “it was just a scratch.” Turned out the other driver claimed *they* were the victim. Total mess. Lesson learned: when in doubt, get the paper trail. But yeah, sometimes you just want to skip the hassle... until it bites you later.

I get where you’re coming from—sometimes the cops just don’t bother, especially if it’s just a dent or scrape. I’ve had them tell me to “just file online” before, which honestly felt like shouting into the void. Still, I keep thinking about this bit:

if there’s any hint the other driver might dispute what happened, the official report is gold.

That’s the kicker for me. Even if it’s a pain, I’d rather have that report in my back pocket than risk getting stuck with someone else’s mess. But here’s the thing: has anyone actually had luck with insurance when there’s no police report? Like, did they pay out without a hassle, or did it turn into a circus? I’m always skeptical when they say “no problem, we’ll handle it”—feels like famous last words.

Honestly, I’ve had insurance pay out without a police report—just photos and a statement. It wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, but it didn’t turn into a full-blown circus either. Sometimes the paperwork headache is about the same, report or not.

I’ve always wondered about this—like, is the police report actually necessary, or is it just one more hoop to jump through? I get that insurance companies sometimes just want photos and a statement, but what happens if the other driver denies everything or just ghosts you? Does having a police report make it less likely for insurance to push back or drag their feet?

A couple years ago, someone sideswiped my car while it was parked on the street. They left a note (miracle, right?), but when I called my insurance, they asked if I had a police report. I didn’t, and honestly, it felt like they were looking for reasons to stall. Eventually they paid out, but it took forever. Maybe it was just my adjuster being picky, but I always wonder if having that report would’ve sped things up.

Also, does it matter if you’re in a city versus a smaller town? I’ve heard some places won’t even send an officer for minor stuff like this unless there’s an injury. Is that true? It seems like the rules are all over the place depending on where you live.

I guess my main question is: does skipping the police report ever come back to bite you later? Or is it just extra paperwork that doesn’t really change anything unless someone’s contesting the claim?
