Finding decent car insurance deals on the islands - my step-by-step

- Noticed the same thing with “unusual” cars - some companies just don’t know what to do with them.
- My rates jumped when I added a 90s Benz coupe, even though it barely leaves the garage. Apparently, “collectible” means “expensive to insure,” even if it’s not worth much.
- Daily drivers seem to get better deals, but my zip code definitely matters more than the car’s age.
- Bundling helped, but I still had to call around and explain my garage isn’t a car museum... just a little eclectic.
- Never tried those tracking apps either - don’t need my insurance company judging my U-turns for coffee runs.

Bundling only got me so far, too. I’ve got a daily driver and a “project” car, and the insurance company just sees dollar signs when they hear “non-standard.” The tracking apps are a hard pass for me - no way am I letting them monitor every turn. Curious if anyone’s actually had luck with classic car policies for older but not-quite-collectible vehicles? I keep hearing mixed things, especially since my area’s rates are already sky-high.

I’ve wondered about those classic car policies too, but from what I’ve seen, they’re usually picky about mileage limits and storage requirements. My neighbor tried to get one for his ‘92 Miata - definitely not a museum piece - and the insurer wanted it garaged and barely driven. Doesn’t really work if you want to take it out on weekends or tinker with it. Have you looked into agreed value policies instead? Sometimes they’re more flexible for “in-between” cars, though the rates can still sting. The tracking app thing is a hard no for me too... feels way too invasive.

I’m with you there - no way am I letting an insurance company monitor my every move just to save a few bucks. About agreed value, though, I’ve heard mixed things. Some companies still want proof of “collectibility” or a bunch of photos, even for cars that aren’t exactly rare. Has anyone actually managed to get a decent agreed value policy for something like a ‘90s import without jumping through endless hoops? Or is it just not worth the hassle?

Right? I don’t need my insurance agent knowing every time I hit the drive-thru or take the “scenic” route home because the kids fell asleep in the back. As for agreed value, I tried once for my old ‘97 Accord (not exactly a collector’s item) and they wanted more photos than my last family vacation. Ended up just sticking with standard coverage - felt like less hassle than convincing them my car was special.
