Honestly, I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve been burned by paying for full coverage when my rates were sky-high after a couple of tickets. Here’s how I started thinking about it: first, I checked the car’s value—if it’s worth less than what you’re paying in premiums and deductibles, it might not be worth it. Next, I looked at my risk (which is... not great) and decided to keep liability but drop collision. Not saying it works for everyone, but sometimes the math just doesn’t add up for me. Still, that peace of mind does have a price tag.

I totally get that logic—my last car was barely worth more than the deductible, so I dropped collision too. But I always wonder about stuff like theft or vandalism, especially living on the islands where parts can be pricey and shipping takes forever. Have you ever had to deal with a claim after dropping coverage? I keep going back and forth on whether it’s worth the risk, especially since my commute isn’t exactly short.

That’s a good point about theft and vandalism—those risks don’t just disappear when you drop collision. I’ve never had to file a claim after dropping coverage, but I did have a friend whose car got broken into while parked at the ferry lot. He ended up paying out of pocket for a busted window and some missing tools, and the shipping delay for the replacement glass was a real headache. It made me rethink how much I’m actually saving by cutting coverage, especially factoring in the hassle.

I keep running the numbers every renewal cycle. Sometimes it feels like you’re just gambling, hoping nothing major happens. Have you looked into comprehensive-only policies? They’re usually cheaper than full coverage but still protect against theft or vandalism. I’m curious if anyone’s found a sweet spot with that, especially with long commutes and island living making repairs more complicated...
