Yeah, totally get that. After my second ticket, the big names just hiked my rates through the roof. Did you notice if your broker had more luck with local companies or national ones? Curious what worked best for you out here.

Honestly, the local companies seemed way more forgiving in my case. After my third ticket (yeah, it was rough), every national brand wanted to triple my premium. My broker found this smaller Maui-based insurer that didn’t care as much about my out-of-state record. Rates were still higher than before, but not nearly as brutal. I’ve noticed the big names just have these one-size-fits-all formulas—locals actually look at your whole story.

That’s been my experience too, but with a twist. After I got a couple of speeding tickets (in a car that practically begs you to go faster, which is its own problem), the national carriers didn’t even bother to ask about context. They just saw the make/model and my record and went straight to “luxury surcharge” mode. The local outfits at least listened—one agent actually laughed about it and said, “We get it, the roads here aren’t built for Ferraris.” Still paid more, but at least it felt like a conversation, not a penalty box.

Yeah, I get that. The big companies just see numbers, not people. Local agents might not save you a ton, but at least they treat you like a human. Sometimes just being able to explain yourself makes the sting a little less sharp.

I get where you’re coming from—there’s something to be said for having a real person to talk to when you’re dealing with insurance headaches. I’ve noticed the same thing with local agents here on Oahu. They might not have the lowest rates, but when my daughter got into a fender bender last year and we were suddenly “high-risk,” our agent actually sat down with us and explained all the options. The big companies just sent emails with scary numbers.

One thing I found helpful was asking about defensive driving courses. Some agents can point you toward classes that’ll knock a bit off your premium, even if it’s not a huge discount. Also, bundling with homeowners or renters insurance sometimes helps, though it’s not always dramatic in Hawaii.

It’s frustrating how much being labeled “high-risk” can cost, especially if it’s just one mistake or bad luck. But at least with the local folks, you’re not just another policy number... they actually remember your name and your story. That counts for something, even if it doesn’t show up on the bill.
