I've done this a couple times myself and it usually works out pretty well. The key is definitely getting multiple quotes—shops can vary wildly on pricing, especially for cosmetic stuff. Also, if you're comfortable with DIY, sometimes minor scratches or dents can be tackled at home with a bit of patience and the right tools. Saved me a good chunk of change once or twice... Glad it worked out smoothly for you, always nice to avoid insurance hikes.
DIY can be fine for minor stuff, sure, but I've seen plenty of cases where folks underestimated damage and ended up with rust or paint issues later. Sometimes biting the bullet upfront saves headaches down the road... just something to consider.
