Renting a car: stick with GEICO or pay for the rental company’s insurance?

Honestly, I’ve had the same worry. My driving record’s not exactly spotless either, and every time I think about using my own insurance for a rental, I picture my rates creeping up even more. The rental company’s coverage feels like a ripoff, but at least if you ding their car, it’s not your insurance sweating. I guess it comes down to how much you’re willing to pay for peace of mind... or if you’re feeling lucky that day.

Honestly, you nailed it—if your record’s already got a few dings, filing a claim through your own policy for a rental can sting way more than just the deductible. Ever looked at how much your rates could jump after a claim? Sometimes it’s not worth the gamble. But then again, those rental company policies are padded with fees and exclusions. Have you checked if your credit card offers any coverage? Some do, and it’s actually decent. Just don’t assume—you gotta read the fine print or call and ask.

Yeah, totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve been burned by a rate hike after a small claim before—didn’t see that coming. Credit card coverage is a good tip, but I always wonder if it’s enough for all situations... those exclusions can get sneaky. Good call on reading the fine print.

Yeah, those exclusions can be a real headache. I’ve had friends think their credit card covered everything, only to find out later about some random clause. Ever notice how the rental companies always seem to have a new “gotcha” fee? Makes me wonder if it’s ever really safe to skip their coverage, even if it feels like overkill. I guess peace of mind sometimes wins out, even if it costs a bit more.

I hear you on those “gotcha” fees. Last year I rented a Mercedes in Miami, thinking my GEICO policy and my Amex would have me covered. Turns out, the rental company had this weird clause about “diminished value” if anything happened to the car—neither my insurance nor the card would touch it. I spent half a day on calls just trying to figure out who would pay if someone so much as scratched the thing.

It’s wild how many hoops they make you jump through. I get that peace of mind is worth something, but sometimes I wonder if it’s just a racket. Still, after that Miami mess, I’ll admit I pay for their coverage if I’m renting something fancy or out of state. With basic rentals, maybe not... but luxury cars? Not risking it anymore. The fine print is always lurking somewhere, and honestly, who has time to read all that legalese when you’re trying to start your vacation?
