Renting a car: stick with GEICO or pay for the rental company’s insurance?

Curious—has anyone ever had their credit card coverage actually pay out on a claim? I’ve heard mixed things about how reliable that is, especially with those extra fees.

Had to deal with this last year—rear-ended a pole in a rental. My credit card did cover the repair, but they flat-out denied “loss of use” and admin fees. GEICO only covered part of it. Ended up paying out of pocket for the rest. Now I always double-check for those exclusions... not worth the headache if you’re accident-prone like me.

Honestly, I’ve been in your shoes—those “loss of use” and admin fees are sneaky. Credit cards usually only cover the basics. I’ve started just biting the bullet and getting the rental company’s insurance if I’m feeling unlucky. Peace of mind sometimes wins out over saving a few bucks.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I used to just rely on my regular insurance and the credit card coverage, but after hearing horror stories about those “loss of use” charges, I started second-guessing it. Sometimes it feels like you’re paying for every possible scenario, but honestly, the stress isn’t worth it if something does go wrong. It’s not fun to shell out extra, but having that backup can be a lifesaver, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar city or driving a car you’re not used to.

- "the stress isn’t worth it if something does go wrong" — I hear that, but I still question if the rental company’s insurance is always necessary.
- My GEICO covers rentals, but I’ve read the fine print and it gets murky with “loss of use.”
- Credit card coverage sometimes fills gaps, but not all cards are equal.
- Personally, if I’m renting something fancy or in a place with wild traffic (looking at you, LA), I’ll pay extra for peace of mind. Otherwise, I stick with my own insurance.
- Anyone else ever actually had to file a claim? Curious how smooth (or not) that process was...

Honestly, I’m in the same boat—first time renting soon and all this insurance stuff is kinda overwhelming. I keep wondering if I’m overthinking it, but the “loss of use” thing with GEICO tripped me up too. Has anyone ever actually had a rental company try to charge for that? I feel like it’s one of those things you don’t worry about until it bites you...
