Not saying you’re wrong about the risk, but I think there’s a little more gray area than people admit:

- Not everyone’s driving around in a new Tesla. Most of the time, it’s fender benders with older cars, and the minimum covers plenty for that.
- I’ve had classic cars for years and honestly, I keep my insurance simple. Never needed more than the basics—knock on wood—but I’m careful where and when I drive.
- The odds of hitting a luxury car are low unless you’re in certain neighborhoods or cities all the time.
- Lawyers get involved if you really mess up, sure, but for most folks, the “bare minimum” is just what they can afford without skipping groceries.

I get wanting peace of mind, but sometimes the extra coverage feels like paying for stuff that’ll probably never happen. Guess it depends on your luck and how much risk you’re willing to live with.

Here’s the thing—minimum coverage in Florida really is just that: the bare minimum. I get where you’re coming from, especially if you’re driving older cars and being careful. But I’ve seen some weird stuff go down, even in “safe” neighborhoods. Fender benders can turn into bigger headaches if the other driver claims injuries, and those medical bills add up fast. The state minimum doesn’t cover bodily injury liability, so if someone gets hurt, you could be on the hook personally.

That said, I totally get not wanting to pay for coverage you might never use. It’s a balance between what you can afford and what you’re willing to risk. Ever had a close call where you thought, “Man, I’m glad I had insurance for that”? Or maybe the opposite—wished you’d had more? Just curious how folks weigh that tradeoff, especially with rates going up everywhere.

That’s what worries me. I used to think, “I’m a careful driver, what’s the worst that could happen?” Then my neighbor got rear-ended at a stoplight and the other guy claimed whiplash. She ended up in court for months. Makes you wonder if saving a few bucks is worth the stress. I still hate paying those premiums, but I’d hate a lawsuit more.

Ever wonder how much those “minimum” policies actually cover if someone sues for way more than your limit? I’ve seen folks get stuck paying out of pocket when the bills go past what insurance covers. Does anyone here carry extra uninsured motorist or just stick with the basics?

I had a client a few years back who thought the minimum was enough—until he rear-ended someone and the medical bills went way past his coverage. He ended up with his wages garnished for years. Minimum sounds cheap, but it’s a gamble most folks don’t realize they’re taking.
