What happens if you only carry the bare minimum car insurance in Florida?

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from. I’ve run bare minimum coverage too, mostly because my rates are already sky-high. Honestly, it’s a calculated risk—if your car’s not worth much, it almost makes sense. But if you get into a bigger accident, you’re on the hook for anything over your policy limits. That “what if” stress is real, especially in Florida where even a minor crash can get expensive fast. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth the savings, but then I see my renewal quote and just roll with it...

I hear you on the rates. I used to carry just the minimum too, but after a buddy totaled his car and still owed thousands out of pocket, I bumped mine up. The peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks for me, even if it stings at renewal time.

Honestly, I get the logic, but isn’t it wild how you can pay insurance for years and still end up owing a pile if something goes sideways? I’ve always wondered—if you’re only carrying the minimum, what happens if you smash into someone driving a Porsche or something? Do they just come after your house next? It’s nuts. I’d rather skip a few lattes than risk that kind of headache.

Yeah, it’s a real gamble carrying just the minimum. Here’s how I look at it:

- If you hit someone with a high-end car and your coverage doesn’t cut it, you’re on the hook for the rest. They can sue, and yep, your assets (like your house) could be at risk.
- I’ve seen folks lose way more than they saved by skimping on coverage. Not worth it for me.
- Honestly, I’d rather skip a few extras too than roll those dice. Peace of mind’s worth a lot.

It’s wild how fast things can go sideways... especially in Florida where cars and lawsuits both seem to multiply overnight.

No kidding. My cousin got rear-ended last year and the other driver only had the minimum. The repairs weren’t even that crazy, but insurance barely covered half, and the rest turned into a huge headache. I get why people go for the cheapest option, but man, seeing it up close made me rethink. Still, sometimes those extras feel like a ripoff too... tough balance.
