What happens if you only carry the bare minimum car insurance in Florida?

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from, but sometimes I wonder if the extra coverage is actually worth it for everyone. My last car was a beater, and I did the bare minimum because I figured, if it got totaled, I’d just move on. But I keep hearing horror stories about people getting sued or stuck with medical bills after a fender bender.

Uninsured motorist coverage is one of those things I never really paid attention to until a friend got rear-ended by someone with nothing. She’s still paying off the hospital bills. Makes me think twice, honestly.

Curious—has anyone actually had to use their uninsured motorist coverage in Florida? Did it actually help, or was it a hassle to get paid out?

Never thought much about uninsured motorist coverage either until my cousin got sideswiped in Tampa. The other driver had nothing—no insurance, no assets, just disappeared. She had UM and said it was a pain dealing with paperwork, but eventually it covered her hospital bills and some lost wages. Took a few months, but without it she’d have been totally screwed. I get wanting to save money, but after seeing that mess, I’m leaning toward having at least a little extra coverage, even for an old car.

Yeah, I used to think all that extra insurance was just a way for companies to squeeze more cash out of us, but after hearing stories like this, I’m not so sure anymore. Florida drivers are wild—sometimes it feels like half the people on the road don’t even have insurance or a clue what a turn signal is. I’ve only got the minimum on my old beater, but now I’m thinking that’s kind of risky, especially since medical bills are ridiculous.

The paperwork sounds like a headache, but honestly, better to deal with that than be stuck paying out of pocket for months. My friend’s dad got rear-ended last year and the other guy vanished... no insurance, nothing. He’s still fighting with his own company over what’s covered. The whole thing makes me wonder if saving a few bucks is really worth the stress. Maybe it’s time to give up a couple Starbucks runs and bump up my coverage.

Honestly, I see this all the time—folks think “bare minimum” means “good enough,” but Florida’s a different animal. Here’s the thing:

- Minimum covers your car and some medical, but if someone hits you and bounces? You’re probably stuck.
- Uninsured drivers here are like gators... everywhere, and you never spot ‘em until it’s too late.
- Medical bills for even a fender bender can make your jaw drop (and your wallet cry).
- The paperwork is a pain, but fighting over who pays is worse. Trust me, I’ve seen people age 10 years in a claims dispute.

Giving up a few lattes for peace of mind isn’t the worst trade. Just my two cents.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually been running with just the minimum for a few years now—mostly because I’m on the road a ton and my budget’s tight. Knock on wood, I haven’t had any major issues. Had a minor fender bender last year near Ocala (deer, not a gator), and my PIP covered most of it. The process was annoying, sure, but not the nightmare I’d braced for.

I do agree that uninsured drivers are everywhere down here, but honestly, I’ve found that being super careful and defensive behind the wheel goes a long way. Maybe I’m tempting fate, but for me, the extra coverage just hasn’t felt worth the squeeze yet. If my situation changes or I start driving something newer than my ‘09 Outback, maybe I’ll rethink it... but for now, skipping the lattes is how I keep gas in the tank.

Not saying it’s for everyone—just that sometimes the bare minimum does the job if you’re realistic about your risks and what you can handle.
