What happens if you only carry the bare minimum car insurance in Florida?

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about it feeling like a gamble. My cousin actually went with the bare minimum when he first moved to Florida because he was trying to save cash. He figured he was a careful driver and nothing would happen. Then, of course, someone rear-ended him at a stoplight and their insurance didn’t cover everything, so he ended up paying out of pocket for some of the repairs. It wasn’t even a huge accident, but the bills stacked up way faster than he thought.

I’m in the same boat as you—trying to balance not breaking the bank every month but also not wanting to freak out every time I get behind the wheel. The extra $20-30 a month is annoying, but honestly, after seeing what happened to my cousin, I’d rather cut back on eating out or something than risk being stuck with a giant bill later. Insurance just feels like one of those things you don’t appreciate until you really need it...

Honestly, I’ve wrestled with this too, especially since repairs on my car aren’t cheap. Here’s how I look at it:

- Bare minimum in FL only covers $10k PIP and $10k property damage. That’s nothing if you drive anything remotely expensive.
- If you get hit by someone with the same bare minimum, you’re probably eating a chunk of the bill yourself.
- I used to think “I’m careful, what are the odds?” but all it takes is one distracted driver and suddenly you’re out thousands.

I get wanting to save, but after seeing a friend’s BMW get totaled and insurance barely covered half, I just can’t risk it. That extra $30 a month stings less than a $5k repair bill.

I get where you’re coming from, but I keep wondering if it’s always worth paying extra for more coverage, especially when you’re already considered “high risk” and the rates are nuts. Like, my monthly payment is already way higher than most people I know, so adding more coverage sometimes feels like throwing money away unless something major happens.

Also, what about people driving older cars? If your ride’s only worth a couple grand, is it really smart to pay for all that extra insurance? I mean, if my car got totaled, the payout probably wouldn’t even cover a decent down payment on a new one anyway. I get that accidents can be expensive, but sometimes it feels like the insurance companies are the only ones winning here.

Not saying bare minimum is perfect, but for some of us with not-so-fancy cars and sky-high premiums, it’s hard to justify the extra cost. Anyone else feel like the system just isn’t built for people who don’t drive luxury cars?

Honestly, for older cars, I usually drop collision and comprehensive once the value dips below a certain point. Liability’s non-negotiable in Florida, but paying extra to cover a car worth $2k just doesn’t add up for me. The system definitely feels skewed toward newer or pricier cars, and high-risk drivers get hit hardest. Still, I’d rather risk losing my beater than shell out for coverage I’ll probably never use.

I get where you’re coming from. My old Civic’s barely worth $1,500 on a good day, so I’ve wondered the same thing. Here’s how I look at it: if I only carry the minimum, I’m covered for what the state requires—mainly damage I might cause to someone else. But if my car gets totaled in a crash that’s my fault, or by a tree falling or something, I’m just out of luck.

I’ve heard stories about people getting into accidents and then having to pay out of pocket for their own repairs, which sounds rough, but for a cheap car, maybe it’s not the end of the world. Still, I worry about those “what if” moments—like, what if I hit a more expensive car and my coverage isn’t enough? Does anyone know if Florida’s minimum liability is actually enough to cover most situations, or are people just rolling the dice and hoping for the best?
