What happens if you only carry the bare minimum car insurance in Florida?

Honestly, I’ve had the same thoughts about whether anyone actually “wins” by sticking with the minimum. Like, maybe if you’re lucky for years and never get into anything worse than a parking lot scrape, you come out ahead? But that’s a huge gamble, especially in Florida where it feels like every other driver is either texting or dodging potholes.

But then you hit a patch of rain or someone else isn’t paying attention, and suddenly you’re staring at a busted bumper and an empty bank account.

That’s what gets me. You can be the most careful person on the road, but it doesn’t matter if someone else messes up. I drive a lot for work, and honestly, I see near-misses almost every week. Makes me wonder how many people out there are just rolling the dice with the bare minimum.

About lawsuits—yeah, that’s the part that freaks me out. People think it’s just about fixing cars, but if someone gets hurt and your insurance doesn’t cover enough, they can come after your savings, your wages, whatever. I haven’t been sued (knock on wood), but a friend of mine got rear-ended by someone with only the minimum. She ended up having to use her own uninsured motorist coverage and still got stuck with bills. The other driver? Pretty much walked away because he didn’t have much to lose.

I get that money’s tight for a lot of folks, but sometimes I wonder if it’s worth saving a few bucks a month when one accident could wipe you out. Is it really “saving” if you’re just hoping nothing bad ever happens? Or is it more like crossing your fingers and hoping you don’t get unlucky?

Car repairs are bad enough, but medical bills or legal stuff… that’s where it gets scary. I’d rather pay a bit more and sleep at night, honestly.

Honestly, I’ve always thought carrying just the minimum is like playing Russian roulette with your wallet. I get wanting to save a few bucks, but one fender bender and suddenly you’re selling your couch on Craigslist to pay for someone’s bumper. Florida drivers are wild—last week I saw a guy eating cereal behind the wheel. I’d rather pay a little extra and not have to stress every time it rains or someone’s texting next to me. Peace of mind is worth more than a couple lattes a month, at least for me.

Yeah, I hear you. The minimum coverage in Florida barely scratches the surface if something actually goes wrong. I used to think it was fine until a buddy of mine got rear-ended—his insurance didn’t even come close to covering the other guy’s repairs, let alone his own. Ended up paying out of pocket for months. Honestly, with how unpredictable drivers are here, I’d rather not gamble on it... even if it means skipping takeout once in a while.

Yeah, I’ve heard way too many stories like that—where someone’s stuck paying for stuff their insurance should’ve handled.

“his insurance didn’t even come close to covering the other guy’s repairs, let alone his own”
That’s rough. I get why people go with the minimum, though, since rates here are already high. Has anyone actually had their rates go up a ton after adding more coverage? I keep thinking about bumping mine up but worry it’ll wreck my budget.

I’ve been looking into this too, since I’m just about to get my first policy. It’s wild how much the minimum covers vs. what things actually cost after an accident. I get wanting to keep payments low, but it sounds like you’re basically gambling that nothing major will happen.

I asked for quotes with higher coverage and yeah, it did bump up the monthly price, but not by as much as I expected—like maybe $20-30 more per month for way better protection. Still not cheap, but maybe worth it if you think about what you’d be on the hook for otherwise.

Honestly, the whole thing confuses me. Feels like you’re stuck either way—pay more now or risk paying a ton later if something goes wrong. I’m leaning toward a bit more coverage just for peace of mind, even if it means cutting back somewhere else.
