Honestly, I’ve been there—shopping around after a couple tickets made my rates skyrocket. The big names kept quoting me crazy numbers, but one of the smaller Delaware-based companies actually gave me a shot, and their claims process wasn’t a nightmare like I expected. Here’s what worked for me: I called around, asked straight up about their high-risk policies, and paid close attention to how they explained stuff. If someone seemed rushed or dodgy, I moved on. It’s weird, but sometimes the “budget” guys are way more helpful when you’ve got dings on your record. Don’t write off the little guys too quick...

That’s a really good point. I’ve noticed the same thing—some of the smaller companies actually take the time to explain coverage options, especially if you’ve had a few bumps in the road. The big brands can feel impersonal, almost like they’re just running your info through a formula and spitting out a number. It’s smart to pay attention to how they handle your questions. Transparency goes a long way, especially when you’re already feeling stressed about rates.

Had a similar thing happen with my old ‘72 Nova. The “big name” insurer barely wanted to talk after seeing my accident in ‘19, but this local outfit in Wilmington actually asked about the car, coverage needs, all that. Wasn’t expecting much, but they surprised me. I’m still not convinced the little guys are always better, but sometimes they actually seem to care... or at least pretend better.

I get what you mean—sometimes the big companies just treat you like a number. I’ve bounced between a couple of local agents and the big names, and honestly, it’s hit or miss either way. Here’s what I do now: make a list of what coverage I actually need, call around, and see who actually listens instead of reading off a script. If they can’t answer basic questions about my minivan or seem annoyed, I move on. Curious—did your local place end up being cheaper, or was it just better service?

Yeah, that’s exactly it—if I get the sense they’re just reading from a script, I’m out. I’ve had local agents who were super friendly but couldn’t actually beat the big guys on price, which was a bummer. But honestly, sometimes paying a little more for someone who actually remembers your name and doesn’t make you repeat your info every time is worth it. Had one agent who called me back after hours when my car broke down in Rehoboth…never got that from the big companies. Guess it’s always a bit of a trade-off.
